Emetophobia

My sister has just found out she’s pregnant which is the best news ever but she suffers strongly with Emetophobia, she’s has panic attacks most nights and is stuck in a cycle, I was hoping to find her some advice from anyone who might have suffered the same? I’m desperate to help and I don’t know how to make this easier for her! She’s going to be the best mummy and I don’t want the pregnancy to cause her so much anxiety

Hey, I also suffer from this phobia and this was a huge concern for me when I found out I was unexpectedly pregnant with my son. How far along is she and does she have any nausea yet? Two things I would suggest:

- She could arrange an appointment at her doctors to explain the situation and ask to be prescribed some anti sickness medication in case she does get morning sickness. That way she’s already got it if she needs it.
- I would also recommend that she refers herself for CBT through the NHS. Even if she’s done it before, this could be really helpful for her during pregnancy and she can explain that the pregnancy has been the ‘trigger’ for it becoming a lot worse. I also believe that because she’s pregnant, she will be high priority on any waiting list. She can refer herself for talking therapies online here: https://www.nhs.uk/tests-and-treatments/cognitive-behavioural-therapy-cbt/

Wishing your sister all of the best with her pregnancy!

Just to add, she should also talk to her midwife about this in her first appointment as they should be able to signpost her and further down the line, they can add it to her birth plan. When I had both of my children, I made sure I was always at the max dosage of anti sickness and that my phobia was in my notes for the midwives etc to see.
