Nail biting

Omg I’m having the same issue! I worry so much it keeps me awake at night. I just want it to be a phase rather than an anxiety thing. I’m home with her all the time and we have so much fun I have no idea how to stop it tho

Reassuring you all that nail biting at this age is actually really common and usually more of a sensory or self-soothing thing than a “bad habit.” You’re not doing anything wrong. ❤️

A few gentle things that can help:
• Try not to make a big reaction when it happens — calm redirection works better than telling her to stop
• Notice when she does it (tired, bored, watching TV, etc.) so you can get ahead of it
• Give her something else to do with her hands or mouth in those moments — playdough, snack, water bottle with straw, or even a teether can work
• Keeping her nails short and smooth can also reduce the urge to pick or bite
• You can gently build awareness with simple language like “fingers out of mouth — let’s wiggle them!”
• And praise her when you notice her hands busy playing instead of biting.

Most kids grow out of this phase, especially with gentle redirection and lots of sensory play during the day.

Regular nail polish is pretty gross, my parents also tried things like hot sauce and bandaids. Maybe if she likes dress up she could get some fancy gloves and be more interested in wearing her dress up

My mom would rub mustard on my hands and then wash it off and when I would smell my hands, I didn’t like the smell so I stopped biting my nails 😭😭
