Should I go to A&E?

My son has been having dry coughs for the past two days now and it's only gotten worse, disturbing both our sleep and it's affecting his eating

I have given Benylin infant's cough syrup and it seems to do nothing but make him sleepy

Initially he had a rise in temperature but not a fever that was around Monday

Today I gave him the syrup and Nurofen and he knocked out

Then the coughs came later in the week now when he coughs he cries because I feel it hurts or is uncomfortable

I don't know what to do and I feel helpless

Should I go to A&E to check it or are there other ways I can help relieve him from this cough?

Is it a barky cough? Sounds like it may be croup, ur gp can treat it with a steroid but a&e can also treat it

Have you been to a pharmacist or GP yet?

How is your baby breathing? Is he sucking in his ribs when breathing? If yes, then you definitely need to get to A&E. It’s might be bronchiolitis and baby is struggling to breathe.

This is the video I found online to show the breathing: https://www.facebook.com/share/v/1BUxgGCHZe/?mibextid=wwXIfr

No I’d call 111 first and get a out of hrs GP appointment

You do not need to take a child to a&e for a cough. Coughs and colds are uncomfortable and children can’t tell tell us what’s hurting so they cry. He might have a sore throat or a headache. He probably has reduced appetite if he’s feeling poorly. Give him some calpol, keep up his fluids, keep him at home and give him lots of cuddles.

Give him a few days, I’m sure he’ll be better ☺️

There’s also loads going around at the moment, my LO has just had two viral infections back to back and sounds very similar to your babies symptoms. Call 111 (it’s an NHS number) they will ask you some questions and they will get you an appointment with a doctor for baby most likely today, rather than having to sit in a&e with poorly baba x

GP, cough syrup probably won’t do anything as before a year (and before 6 years, I think) they have hardly any active ingredients. Stay on top of calpol for temperature - nurofen is more for active pain - and explain everything to the GP including interrupted sleep, and if it’s impacting his feeding and nappies especially. They’ll be able to listen to his chest and see if there’s anything more serious happening.

Please don’t take him to A&E unless it’s an actual emergency. If you just want him checked over I’d suggest a pharmacist or GP first. Then 111 or a walk-in if really necessary. A&E should always be a last resort

Phone 111 first and try and get an out of hours appointment as first call. It doesn't sound like it needs A&E but obviously its difficult to say for sure. 111 can advise you.
I am an A&E nurse of course we would never turn away anyone worried about their child but sounds like probably more of a GP issue currently!

A&e isn’t the place it’s not an emergency . Call 111 and they will book out of hours apt x.

Call 111 and follow their advice. If needed they'll send you to A&E but prebook you a slot.

I wouldn't go straight to A&E - this isn't an emergency.

My daughter has had a cough and phlegm for 2 weeks. She had a fever for 3 days. We went to a walk in clinic on day 4. Its just a virus. It takes coughs a long time to clear. I would not take my baby to a hospital for a cough unless I was worried it was croup that needed steroids.

What does his throat look like?

Avatar

As we speak he's struggling to sleep because now he has blocked nose 😭 😭 😭😭😭😭😭😭 I'm literally dozing on and off I need sleep

Avatar

Update he now has a blocked nose and we both didn't sleep the entire night

He kept tossing and turning, 😭😭😭 waking up, crying and coughing

I feel so helpless

Went to the GP and he said there's a virus going around and to keep doing what I was doing, elevated sleep, saline spray, nasal aspiration and an occasional Calpol for pain but it will subside it's just painful to watch a baby go through it

Thank you ladies for the advice and it has given me peace to know that I am not totally alone in this

Much love and Appreciation 🩷🩷🩷
