So I’m sharing a room with a lady so it’s me my daughter and that lady in one room. I asked my daughter 2yo to come shower with me bc it was time for bed. My kid refused many times and I told her that if she doesn’t want to shower then she’s sleeping on the floor bc I was not letting her hop on the bed dirty with me and my kid agreed to sleep on the floor. The lady tried to convince my daughter but she refused again.
So I went to shower by myself. I came out and the lady was asleep in her bed. I put a sheet on the floor and my daughter fell asleep on the floor next to my bed.
My bed is a bunk bed but I was afraid to have her sleep above me and her fall while I’m asleep.
I feel bad bc I didnt have anything for cushion I just moved in this room so all I put on the floor was a sheet a pillow and her blanket.
Was this too harsh? I don’t think so but I do feel bad. I’m a super loving and caring mom but I am big on boundaries and consequences.
What alternate consequences could have been applied instead?

my kid falls asleep on the floor occasionally on his own. i chose to sleep on the floor of my closet when i was a kid. had several sleepovers at friends houses where we would just put some sheets on the floor and sleep on them. i don’t think you did anything wrong here<3 kids are much more comfortable on the floor than we are 😂 if she had been upset about sleeping on the floor and you forced her to i might say that’s too harsh but this sounds completely reasonable. maybe invest in a sleeping bag if/when you can? also see how she feels in the morning. as long as she’s not sore and she’s slept the night i don’t see an issue.

I dunno... I don't really feel like this is super reasonable because they're only 2. I don't think sleeping on the floor should be used as a consequence at all tbh... and if bathing is a *requirement* for sleeping in bed then bathing shouldn't be offered as an option, especially at that age... I think you should have both mustered through the stress of a 10 minute shower than willingly subject them to 8+ hours of potentially poor quality sleep. Also, your toddler could wake up in the middle of the night disoriented without any recollection of the consequence they agreed to... then what would you do??

What is the floor surface? Carpet, wood? If carpet than maybe ok, but not at age 2, maybe 5 or 6 minimum. I agree with Helvetica, shower shouldn't have been a question asked. Don't ask questions if you are only looking for a yes. Ask a choice instead. "It's shower time, do you want to take this toy or this one with you?" Something like that

Hmm... so, I've been thinking about this and honestly I think all you really did was save the fight of a bath and chose to have your toddler sleep on the floor today. I get that you say you were respecting her use of the word "No" but at some point she'll have to take a bath so it might be confusing for her to understand why you chose to respect her no one day but not another. Also, it seems kind of wrong to teach her that in order to gain respect she'll have to agree to a consequence.

I personally don’t get having to have a shower to be able to sleep in a bed - had it been a while since she had last showered? If it’s a non negotiable for you then I would have just carried her and put her in the shower.

In my experience, if a toddler is resisting a bath or shower, you pick them up and place them in it.
You don’t say “well you’re dirty so sleep on the floor” the child in this scenario is 2 years old….. the onus of being clean is really not on herself yet.
Especially think it’s odd when there’s another mattress that could’ve been used? Like you coulda laid a sheet out, put the top bunk’s mattress ontop of the sheet and then had your daughter on her own mattress 🤷♀️

At 10 years old, maybe this would be appropriate. But definitely not at 2 years old, they won’t understand the correlation, or learn any lesson. Having a shower is a non negotiable, you’re the parent and you make it happen whether they say no or not.

My little dude went through a period of absolutely hating baths around that age. It was a struggle. I didn't make him bathe during moments of particularly high stress. I didn't take anything away from him either though. Sometimes we had to muster through that process though because I had to be the leader of decisions that time... but either way, his decision vs mine had no impact on where he would sleep or what he would normally expect to receive from me. Ya know? Kids so young don't know better but could you imagine an adult peer asking you, "Do you want to wash yourself right now or sleep on the floor tonight?" Bonkers, lmao! It took a lot for my son to feel cool with baths again, toys..bubbles..splashing everywhere lol daytime baths, getting him used to water around his eyes, etc. He's like a little fish now! Anywayyyyy, if I'm confused over this bathtime/bedtime consequence situation, a much younger person might be a little bit confused too is all.

I wouldn’t have applied a consequence because I wouldn’t have allowed this to happen.
No child of mine is sleeping on the floor over another available bed/mattress. Especially when sharing a room with some random lady.
I would have enforced the shower but literally just picking her up and taking her. She wouldn’t have had a choice.
I don’t think any of this is appropriate tbh.

"It definitely made her think about her actions"
At 2, this isn't something kids are developmentally capable of.
I disagree with what you did and never would have told my kid they are sleeping on the floor if they didn't shower, I also would have taken her in so she wasn't alone with a stranger though. This is alarming to me.
She seems to have loved it, which is good. It does no harm to sleep on the floor every now and again as a kid.

Ok, let's recap..you say you felt bad because you had no cushion...but you did, by your own admission you were just to lazy to put down the top bunk mattress/ didn't want something so big on the floor. ...you would rather the stranger lady potentially trip over your kid than a mattress.
You asked if you were too harsh and we answered, most think you were. Yet you try to fight each one in the comments. If you think you did fine, then why did you bother to ask.
What alternative consequences? You also asked and we answered. Again, you dismissed them.
Furthermore, she woke up and was happy about sleeping on the floor...so how is the learning to do anything? Not to mention at this age, they aren't capable of the learning you are hoping for.
What IS the point of this post?

Eh I think this is rage bait because in every comment you argue your actions were fine and everyone was happy
If that's what you really thought, you wouldn't have bothered to make a post about it.

WTF!? Forcing a child to sleep on the floor is seriously messed up! Be a parent and force her to take a bath if you think it's so gross to sleep in a bed without a shower. Toddlers push boundaries and like to say no, it's what they do. It's a parent's responsibility to teach a toddler that they have to listen to their parent.

Are you kidding me??? Yeah, you’re wrong mama. That wasn’t appropriated ESPECIALLY for a two year old. 😢

I would be giving her a bath no matter what, she’s 2 for gods sake. She doesn’t even know what free will is and being clean is a non negotiable. And I definitely wouldn’t be making her sleep on the floor either. Especially if there’s just a random lady you’re sharing a room with.

I have a strong willed two year old who sometimes doesn’t want to do things that are non negotiable but he does them anyway because I don’t give in.
It absolutely broke my heart reading this. I would NEVER give him a consequence of sleeping on the floor, no matter what the circumstances.
Far too harsh, that poor child.

Even your roommate thought ur idea was shit. Things required for human survival like shelter, food, a place to sleep, a way to stay clean, etc. should never be intentionally taken away in order to punish a child. Like, forcing a 2 year old to sleep on the floor would be considered a human rights violation
