Toddler swearing.

I’ve not a massive potty mouth. But on occasion such as my other daughter pooing through her nappies ‘fu** sake’ has slipped the mouth.

2 year old has now decided to take on board this vocabulary. The ‘fu**’ isn’t obvious as she can’t say it properly, but paired with the very clear ‘sake’ you can gather what she’s saying.

I believe I told her not to say it to start with, however she has continued. IN CONTEXT I may add so she’s not saying it constantly, she is saying it at ‘appropriate’ times - not that there’s any appropriate times for a 2 year old to say it, but I mean more in context.

So any how, she’s said it now maybe 5/6 times, but they’re becoming more frequently. We’ve just been ignoring her, no laughing literally just ignoring but I don’t think that’s helping.

How do you tell them off for swearing? I don’t want to make a big deal out of it as don’t want her to then think it’s funny to say?? Not that we laughing but sometimes it makes it worse?? Or do I just go heavy down the, no we don’t do and what????

OBVIOUSLY I need to proper watch my mouth. Was thinking maybe try say ‘god sake’ instead, or ‘deep breaths’ but yeah I don’t know. New to this.

After tips please.

There’s an account called Big Little Feelings who shared about their kids doing this recently and they did similar, just ignored and the entertainment factor of it wore off - for older kids you can ‘allow’ them to say it in the house to again avoid it becoming something of a novelty x

The only thing with ignoring her currently is I don’t think she feels it’s entertaining. I think she’s just seen me get annoyed at something then say it so now when she does something of the same thing she says that.

my toddler started saying it quite often. when I accidentally said it other day I realised straught away and told myself off like i told my daughter im naughty for saying that and she never actually said it after and lucky aint heard it since so now im trying so hard to say fudge or oh dear

I had the same when I dropped box of plates. She wouldn’t stop saying it for a good week or so after, now it’s stopped. I ignored it even not making big deal of saying it when realised and told myself of internally at the time.
But realised if I said back to her when she said it once, can’t remember exactly what I said. But said.. oh foxes sick or foxes sing (can’t remember). Then said ohhh I don’t see any foxes, but cats dogs foxes horses all sing don’t they probably and made a little jokey story and side tracked her off it. Weirdly stopped after that

For context I think I said “fucks sake” and that’s what she was trying to copy and was repeating in her own way even though I wasn’t giving a reaction. But yea, when I did that above it seemed to stop luckily but bizarrely

I know you said you’re ignoring it already. Maybe also trying to replace it with something else?
Like my daughter copies Peppa Pig, so her go to is to say “oh trumpet!” Instead of a swear word 🤣
Maybe try and incorporate something like that into your vocab and make a bit point of saying it. You could even purposefully drop something and say it when she can hear you. Make it something silly that makes her laugh, and she might replace it?! Might be worth a try! Good luck!
