Im currently 39 weeks and have my OB appointment on Thursday where I will be offered a membrane sweep. Should I accept or decline it? I know for some women it doesnt do much. I want to avoid induction as my plan for this labour & birth is to go unmedicated if that helps.

Membrane sweep is a form of induction! I have gotten a membrane sweep and personally would never do it again, it was so incredibly uncomfortable and painful that I didn’t think it was worth it, baby will come when baby’s ready! But of course do what’s best for you and your baby:)

I did it for both my pregnancies. With my first pregnancy it worked at 39 weeks went into labour same day. The way the doctor explained it, a membrane sweep will only work if you’re going to go into labour soon, it just helps advance it. If it doesn’t work, just means your body/baby isn’t ready yet. For example, I went into labour at 39 weeks after a sweep and the doctor said, I would have gone into labour a few days later if I didn’t get the sweep, she just helped accelerate it.

All I can do is share my experience. I decided to accept the membrane sweep at 39 weeks. I had it around 1:00 PM on a Thursday. My water broke at 14 hours after at 3:00 AM on Friday, and my daughter was born by 7:30 PM Friday, two days before my due date. I have no idea how labor would have happened if I had declined the membrane sweep, so who can say if it helped me avoid needing induction, but I didn’t need pitocin/induction help.
Whether you accept or decline, I hope labor is kind to you and am wishing you all the best! You’ve got this 💪🏼

I had 3 membrane sweeps and none of them really helped. I stayed 1-1.5 cm dilated through the last 2 weeks, and had an induction at 41 weeks, by the induction date I dilated to 3 cm, so avoided the balloon. Originally I was aiming for an unmedicated birth too, but decided to go with an epidural after the induction, and had a very happy birthing experience.
You can try the sweep to see if it works for you of course, but for me it didn’t even cause a single contraction or even a cramp 😅

I say get it , I was 38w when I thought I was actually 37w, plus in laws were gone away for a wedding & my parents live far and we were getting Reno’s done . So we decided to just naturally wait , the next day I went into labour . I had some complications and I had to be induced due to heavy bleeding . This then caused her heart rate to drop so they had to have a c section . I was medicated and none of the inductions were working , they even had to break my water .

It didnt do much for me for induction wise… I had 2 done during my pregnancy, the second one was while we were monitoring his heart rate and that is actually how we learned I needed an emergency c-section asap

If your body is already leaning toward labour, a membrane sweep can sometimes give it that little nudge — increasing prostaglandins, softening the cervix, and potentially starting labour within 24–48 hours.
That said, if it were 100% effective, we wouldn’t need other induction methods. For some people it works beautifully. For others, nothing happens. It really can be hit or miss.
There are also two variations
Membrane sweep: the provider gently separates the membranes from the lower part of the uterus and cervix.
Sweep and stretch: this includes the membrane separation and a manual stretching of the cervix. It’s more intense and often more uncomfortable.
The procedure itself is quick — usually just a few seconds — but the stretch version in particular can feel quite strong in the moment.
Afterward, it’s normal to experience mild cramping (similar to period cramps) and some light bleeding or spotting throughout the day.

I did multiple for my first two pregnancies - they did nothing except cause me discomfort lol. It was still several days before labour started, and with my first I still ended up being induced. Third babe, I just said no. I know for some ladies it works great, but not for me!
