Does your 4 year old still need reminders about using the bathroom or do they go on their own?

My son has been potty trained for almost 2 years at this point and still will not go to the bathroom without being told. He doesn’t have full accidents and can clearly hold his bladder but instead of going when his bladder is full he just does the dance that lets me know he needs to go. It’s like he tries to hold it for as long as possible often has dribbles in his underwear because I catch it too late. And it doesn’t matter what is going on (it’s not like he’s preoccupied with a fun activity and doesn’t want to stop for a bathroom break). This happens every day and nothing I do works. It’s like there’s a disconnect between his body and his brain realizing his bladder is full. I don’t know what to do anymore!

Does he wear training underwear or regular underwear? I didn’t realize the extra layers in training underwear worked so well that dribbles didn’t bother my son either, so when he switched to regular undies, he’d feel the dribbles immediately and hasn’t had a day time accident since. He will also hold it for a long time so I need to remind him to pee if I notice he hasn’t gone in a while. (Well… idk if I really need to but I do anyway since I don’t want him to hold it and get bladder issues)
