Hello everyone, I would just like some input, advice, comments on what I can do to help my son. He’s 20 months old. And his teacher has some concerns because he doesn’t talk much, not pointing, “In his own world” when playing outside at the park, and only listens to his name being called sometimes. At home is sorta the same for all. But he’s super social, eats everything, cry’s for things he wants, plays, interacts with familiar people, sometimes can lose eye contact though. He’s an only child. And we also thing he may need tubes in his ears.

This sounds typical for 20 months to me? At least in terms of “being in his own world” - toddlers really don’t show interest in playing with other children until closer to 2, i thought? And even then, they don’t actually play together, just parallel play. If he’s social at home with familiar people, i would worry too much! He could simply just be a very busy toddler. Maybe a speech eval would be a good first start! But even then, if he has at least 10 words and understands a lot/follows instructions, he may not even qualify for EI services just yet.

Seems normal

Hi! I’d say it wouldn’t hurt to go see a speech-language pathologist. They could do a hearing screening to see if hearing is normal and then also help you with strategies to promote language.
