Those with small children who speak three or more languages at home - how does it work for you and what has been most effective?
We live in the Scotland . I’m Czech, my fiancé is Hungarian, and we speak exclusively English together. OPOL (one parent one language) is often mentioned everywhere, but how does it actually worked for you in practice? And especially when you’re all at home together? Do you keep using all three languages, or just the shared one (in this case English)?
Thank you in advance for all your responses 🤗

We're a bilingual family doing OPOL. So generally I speak Spanish to my baby, husband speaks English. I speak English to him even in front of her but when talking to her I switch to Spanish. It gets messy but It's not that hard once you get use to it. I don't know if it works or not bcs she's only 8 months now, I guess I'll see when she starts saying words!

We only have the two and my LO is still too small to know how things turn out, but I can only say - don't give up any language, even little exposure is better than no exposure! Every family has different dynamics, depending on how much time each parent spends with their child, if they understand each other languages, etc, so it's hard to tell what will work for everyone, but I agree that OPOL is what's encouraged.
I can only say, make sure you speak your own native languages as much as possible and in every context you can, with as many family and friends as you can. Make it fun and, down the line, necessary! Chances are they will understand it just by having you, but English is such an overpowering language, it's easy for them to prefer it when they grow older. So it's handy to have people or even a soft toy they know only understands your language, so they have to use it with them whether they want it or not.
I also recommend finding accounts on social media about this, they always give good tips 🙂

Hi,
I only have 2 languages and do the exact same as Araceli and it's working pretty well. She is more advanced in Italian although we live in Scotland 💃
On Instagram I follow Dr. Taylor Benyahia and in her last reel she explains what works for them with 4 languages 👌
