I am visiting a day nursery on Monday which will potentially be where my son will go after Christmas when he is 11 months.

Where do they sleep
Food menus / what do they include, do they change them up
How do they support language development / ask about nurseries curriculum.
Staff ratios/class sizes
Sickness - their policies on allowing children in who are poorly (flu, sickness, chicken pox, norovirus, conjunctivitis, hand food and mouth, all the common childhood illness’)
I checked online for any offsted reports/complaints and asked about those.
As the child grows how do they increase independence, for example at our nursery as the children grow they have little roles and responsibilities like taking their plate away, clearing up after themselves etc.
The one we went with we didn’t actually have any questions as the nursery covered EVERYTHING. Some of them I felt like I was having to ask about every aspect of nursery life x

When I took my son with me for a visit, so I could see what the staff were like with him and towards other children there, I asked questions about ratio in the room, what the routine is like, how they would go about supporting my son at nap time/where he would sleep, how long staff had been there to see what the turnover of staffing was like x

I got all my questions answered and more, I literally didn't have a thing to ask. At two others it was a bit like pulling teeth to get information out of them about anything, made me very weary!

I think they’ll come naturally when you’re there. I viewed one last week - it sent me into a crazy spin as I couldn’t see how they’d evacuate the children safely in the event of an incident / fire given the set up, this wasn’t something I went in expecting to ask. When asked they couldn’t give me a clear explanation of what they’d do either so I wrote that one off instantly. I also asked if they have a de-fib on site - not all will but having an awareness of your nearest should suffice (this nursery couldn’t tell me that either!).
