I grieve the mother I could have been if I wasn’t forced to become a researcher, advocate, therapist, coordinator, and crisis manager. Special needs parenting changes so much, that sometimes you mourn the softer version of motherhood you once imagined.

Definitely true. Becoming a single more changed everything and then a diagnosis changed it again. I wouldn’t change my son for the world but I wish everyday things wouldn’t be harder for him. That the world was accepting, understanding, accommodating. That he didn’t have to try and fit in a mold but could be himself. Children with disabilities of any kind are taught to fit in the world, the world also needs to accept not everyone is the same.
