Calling all formula feeding mommy's

Hi all mommy's!

I need some advice with my LO who is exclusively bottled fed with formula.

So far we have been giving LO ready to feed but due to reflux we have been recommended to change to anti reflux powder instead (they don't come in ready to feed)

I am a bit worried of making the bottles wrong and seeing mixed messages.
Health care worker from NHS says to boil water and instantly put powder. Manufacture says to cool down boiled water to 45 min max at 70 degrees.

Some make up a jug ready for the day but Manufacture says do not refrigrate. Confused!

How do you all make yourself the safest and most efficient way?
Boiling water and then wait 45 min to mix and then wait again for 5-10 min before feeding sounds crazy..like who's baby waits 1 hour to be fed!?

So we always did the hot shot method and then refrigerated - not in a jug but in individual, sterilised bottles - used within 24 hours and never any issues x

Honestly I am on my second baby with reflux and have always used a prep machine. You can buy a second hand pretty cheap. Ready in 2 minutes x

My 6 month old had bad reflux too, he’s on aptamil anti reflux milk with the anti colic bottles from tommee tippee, works wonders, I make up the boiled water in the day straight from the kettle, measure 210ml water in the bottle and put into a rapid cool which takes around 20/30 seconds to cool it to drinkable, and then add 7 scoops of milk powder to the water in the bottle and give it a shake as it can get clumpy and give it to him, in the night I have a thermos flask which I use for hot water and do the same steps it just saves having to come down and wait for the kettle to boil whole everyone else is sleeping, hope this helps x

Definitely let cool down because if you put it on a boiling water it’s not going to be very nutritious. We have a cooling flask and it’s so fast

I use a prep machine, my HV said they are not reccomend by the NHS but perfectly safe to use as long as you maintain and clean them regular as per manual which is normally for me once month for a cleaning cycle. I clean the jug every day though.

We use the tommee tippee perfect prep at home and have the Nuby rapid cool for on the go.

We keep powder measured out too so no losing track or count if in a rush or tired.

I remember those feelings all too well. Our boy was 2 months by the time we switched from the ready made to powder. It's daunting at first, but you'll soon get used to it.

FTM and my baby was a reflux baby. There’s 2 methods I’ve used.

1: hot shot/cool water method. I have the number of scoops in the bottle, put hot shot, mix. Then put the cool water to bring the temp down to drinkable.

2: Tommy Tippy Prep Machine!!! I used Method 1 for when we go out. 100% of the times we’re home we use this machine. Such a time saver and literally push of a button. Sounds like a coffee maker so I just imagine I’m making bub his coffee 😂

Do not add immediately boiled water to formula - it will destroy the nutrients in a formula! No idea why a hca told you that. You have to wait 30 mins for it to cool to 70° - below 70° won't kill the bacteria and above ruins the nutritional value. I have seen some people make up a jug of boiled water, put it in the fridge and make bottles with 70%boiled and 30% cooled. Some people do a 50/50 split.
There's also prep machines, the nuby rapid cool (which is amazing when out and about). You can premake bottles and refrigerate them so theyre ready for the whole day. The nhs doesn't love it as it gives time for bacteria to breed but they acknowledge the risk is fairly low (but not zero)

Honestly I was never this fussy with it. I filled the bottles with filtered water and out them in fridge. When feedings came up I would take them out of the fridge to make sure that they were room temperature and then I added the scoops of formula into the bottle and I shook them. I think if I do formula feed my second child I will just get a prep machine.
