My 6 month old little boy has severe eczema. We were referred to the paediatrician who advised to try dairy free formula to see if it was CMPA but that hasn’t improved anything (been on it for nearly 2 months now).
He has been prescribed hydrocortisone, Eumovate and various emollients (Cetraben & Fifty Fifty) and although the Fifty Fifty emollient definitely has improved with the dry skin, it hasn’t stopped his incessant scratching and I don’t love that it contains paraffin.
He scratches all day and all night (whenever his mitts are off) so we have to keep them on most of the time and I’m worried it’s hindering his play & exploring and motor skills. It’s also sooo upsetting to see how much he scratches and the constant discomfort and pain he is in.
We have been referred to the dermatologist but the appointment isn’t until August and I’m at my witts end.
Has anyone else dealt with this and if so, what helped your little one?
Also just to say, we have also bought the Happy Skin sleepsuits to see if that helps but again, hasn’t sorted the discomfort at night.

Have you tried an oat bath? I give them to my little boy xx

No I haven’t actually! Does it help his skin? Xx

My little one has really bad eczema like this all over her body. We didn’t like the other medications available due to their side effects so this is what we did - but please I recommend you do your research.
1. Bath every 3-4 days and keep it short 10-15 max.
2. Pat to dry skin and immediately put on Cetaphil ointment (clear stuff and not white!!! This is important)
3. Moisturize 2-3 times a day and don’t skip.
4. If red and bad, then put hydrocortisone all over red areas 100% for two days, then 50/50 mix with cetaphil for another two days, then 75/25 mix for two more, and then 25/75 for two more, and then just keep going with the cetaphil. The idea is to calm down the skin little by little because hydrocortisone is a steroid so you cannot just off it as it will worsen again and it becomes a cycle. We use the hydrocortisone for kids by Aquaphor from Amazon.
5. For hair, use unscented mineral/baby oil before bath and after bath.
6. This is key: do not use baby shampoos or soaps!

I just want to say that I'm sorry you (and him!) are going through this. My little boy had it bad when he was little and I remember the pain I would feel seeing him scratch himself until he bled every day and night. He would wake up screaming crying scratching :(
Turns out back then the worst of it was allergy to nuts and as he was breastfed the nuts went through to him like that. I remember once I washed him with breastmilk as they say it helps only for him to have a masssssive itchy flare up all over. Oh I felt like an absolute idiot worst mother :(
Still flares up quite bad, currently in the middle of one. Don't know why :(
Dermexa aveeno has helped us regularly. I don't like steroid creams but I use if I really have to. We were given Epimax gel (purple one) which helped as well. Oat baths can be helpful.
I'll give the fifty fifty a go you mentioned.
It's awful for them poor things :(
God bless and hoping things improve soon for you
