My daughter is 2½ and starting to become curious about that area. I’m interested to know what terms other parents use and how you’ve handled the curiosity and conversations around privacy in an age appropriate way. Thanks

I don’t know what gender my unborn child is but I plan on calling it a vulva it’s a girl. My parents called it my front bottom with me and that was sufficient 😂

The anatomically correct names. No shame and stigma in calling them what they are. Cutesy names give me the ick, and can be a safeguarding issue if anything untoward were to happen. We teach them the right names for the rest of their body parts, why not for penis/vagina/vulva?
Our daughter is 3, knows the names, and we’ve had conversations about things like only mummy and daddy should help you wipe/wash. She likes privacy when she going to the toilet herself so she’s got the concept of asking for privacy for certain things already.

Exactly the same as Charlotte. We refer to parts as they are. It is normal and another part of the body like an arm or a foot.
From the age of 2 we started speaking openly particularly around differentiating between help for wiping vs independence when toileting. My son is very vocal in expressing his boundaries and request for privacy which we honour.
In terms of curiosity, I use this as an opportunity to remind my son his body is for him and a reminder around exploration in safe areas I.e at home only.

I’ve always said vulva and penis, but for some reason vulva has never stuck and she just called it bum for ages 😂
My eldest is 5y and she thinks the word fanny is hilarious so that’s what she currently calls it (I blame my husband).
I do think using the proper terms is important but equally, I think they should know the general slang terms (where appropriate) as they get older, as they will undoubtedly hear things at school.
I use penis / willy interchangeable as well as testicles / ball bag (i just think a 3yo saying ball bag is funny 😂🫣)

We use the anatomically correct terms. My 3 year old boy now points at people and says 'Gina or penis?' (speech delayed and struggled with the v sound). Not my favourite game of his but thankfully most people laugh.
