I went privately at 16 weeks for a gender scan and it was accurate. They can write it down if you ask.
At NHS 20 week scans, my understanding is that they can and will tell you in the scan room (if baby is in a good position) but many health boards have a rule against sonographers writing it down for you to take away.

They wrote mine down at 20w nhs scan

Nhs cannot write it down for you x if you want to have a gender reveal party/event and want to find out on the day of the event it is best to book a private scan- they can write the gender in an envelope etc x you still get to see the baby and hear the heart beat but when they check for gender they switch the screen off to not give it away x once you have it written down you can do as you wish with it - we have ordered a cake for our twins and having the reveal this coming Saturday x you can actually see the gender from week 15 x we had ours done at 16+2 and the lady found both genders very quickly x the scan took about 20 ish min x
With most private scans you can also request digital versions of photographs as well as a video 🥰

If you want a gender reveal that's a surprise for you you'll need to go private. The 20 week scan, whilst often the time you'll be able to find the gender out, has much more important things to check and often limited time particularly if the baby isn't in the optimal position. I've never heard of one refusing to look for the gender but I've never heard of one writing it down either. Private companies will do it and either write it down or do a confetti cannon etc for you to do a party/reveal if that's something that's important to you!

My NHS hospital wrote it down without any issues.

My nhs hospital won’t write it down. Said it was for like insurance purposes or something. Plus they’re very strict on getting all the right measurements & checks for baby. It’s not a chill scan it’s very medical.

My NHS hospital wrote it down for me… I had to go back for a second scan because they didn’t have full visual access to her spine so they had more time to do it for me then. They gave it on a note that said, please be aware this may not be 100% accurate but we have made our best informed guess dependent on what we can see, but it was correct.
There’s a chance they can’t write it down because of positions and they have so many more important things to check over that they may run out of appointment time to check it.

Some trusts don't tell you the gender at all at the 20 week scan. Some have a rule against writing it down. If you want to be certain you can do the gender reveal then you need a private scan.
