Help - double surname

Please could you share experiences of having a double surname - do you/ your children have two separate surnames or a hyphenated double barrelled surname?

Have you had any issues with either?

Trying to work out which is going to be best as have heard both ways can cause problems!

Thank you!!

I have a double barrel surname and it's a nightmare lol. Mainly because I love both of my names and because I was given it because my parents weren't married and my mum didn't want to give up her name. So it started as a feminist statement.

However - I am also not married to my long term partner, who also has two surnames.

And now we have a baby so the question of what to call him was really long. You can't quad barrel a baby!

So now the baby just has his "main" surname and the feminist dream has ended which makes me sad. The hyphen is also a bit annoying on forms but that's not really a problem.
Fully aware I could have played it differently but that's just where we are!

I had a double-barrelled surname twice. As a child I had both my parents names... And it was a total nightmare. Ppl struggled to spell both of them as well, just to make it worse 🤣 once I was 19 I deed-polled and dropped one of them. Then a few years later I got married and double-barrelled again (my husband also took my surname on) and that was less of a hassle, as an adult, and also it was my free choice and kinda felt like a novelty because I was excited to be married? I'm divorced now lol. When I had my daughter, her dad (who I wasn't married to) wanted to double-barrel, but I decided against it.

Personally I think if you don't double-barrel it's a little easier as the second surname can be used as the "official" one but if the parents are not married I think it's just better if the child has the mum's name.
