What age is it appropriate to discuss death with child
My step daughter is 4 years old she had mentioned on two different occasions about something or someone dieing.
The first she said something to her mom on the way home about a bird dying and it being funny. We realized it was from the pudgy episode of bluey.
And then yesterday while with us she said something about having a nightmare about her mom dieing in a volcano and was upset. We don't talk about death around her and her mom says they don't and they feel it's inappropriate at this age.
But when both sides let her watch disney movies where a parent dies or grandparents.
I think she is going to put two an two together.
Her mom doesn't want to have a conversation with our daughter since she is to young. But me and my husband think we should since she is getting scared and obviously understand and her cousin her age have had that conversation because of pets passing and they are fine.

Dec 2024 we lost my husband's grandpa, we just lost my gramps a few days ago. We have started discussing death with our 4yo as a result. Interestingly enough when we were back home last week, we visited my great grandparents grave (as they died on the same day but totally unrelated deaths) but looking at some of the other gravestones we saw a 6 mo baby grave and I commented on it and for the rest of that week my son was fixated on that. We reassured him that it happened a long time ago pre vaccines and safe sleep practices etc. So likely because of that, but he has been asking more since both these things. With my husband's grandpa it was different, he was still too young and we didn't talk about it, just that Papa isnt around anymore, my MIL said he is a ⭐️in the sky. But with my gramps I got emotional and my son wanted to make it better, he became Spidey which I ❤️. he has asked a few questions these past few days, and we have been honest. And hope that we all live as long as both our grandparents did.
