Reflux

For my little one we got prescribed Gaviscon but I prefered to go with an anti reflux formula instead to test out first. And it worked for my baby. Gaviscon in theory is just a thickner as well from what I understand. So if entirely formula fed baby then I recon it should work?

We have been on cow and gate anti reflux milk and it has made such a huge difference for us. My LO was spitting up a quarter of a feed after every meal, coughing and gagging and couldn’t lay flat and so we were put on gaviscon and it didn’t touch the sides. We made the change in the milk (and teat sizes - be aware) and thing immediately improved but you can’t take thickened milk and gaviscon. He is now on omeprazole as well and the combo worked great for him.

I’ve had three reflux babies. My first we tried everything reflux formula, gaviscon, omeprazole. But she ended up having CMPA so reflux formula we couldn’t use so ended up using carobel which is a thickener. Reflux formula is just thickened also. My second we used reflux formula but I complained to my health visitor about the price so she got me a prescription for carobel, so we could just buy regular formula and add it instead of paying extra for reflux formula. Then with my last who is a march 2026 we use carobel as he has CMPA also. So my advice is to save yourself some money if you think reflux formula might work ask your doctor for carobel to just add to regular formula or you can buy a box from a pharmacy for between 5-7 to see if it works first.
