I’m not able to breastfeed and I expressing for 80-90% of feeds and then using formula when out or during the early hours when I’m too tired to pump. It’s only been 3 weeks and I’m curious to know if anyone is doing this or similar and has been for a long period of time? Midwives have told me I’m working hard but it might not be sustainable long term.

I have been pumping and supplementing with formula since baby was a week old (he's 3 months now) because my supply wasn't coming in and my baby wasn't gaining weight. It's harder than breastfeeding in some ways because I can't just wake up to feed him and then fall asleep immediately afterwards; I wake up to pump, and sometimes he doesn't eat until an hour later, so I don't really get to sleep in between. And I always have to have a bottle ready for him.
But it's easier too, in ways that are really important to me. My partner can do some feedings, so I do get some good sleep for part of the night. And I never have to worry about him not eating when I'm not with him. I do have to pump all the time to keep my supply up, and I have to use supplements to make sure it stays up, because pumping isn't as effective as breastfeeding for sustaining your supply.
I believe in you! You can do this!
