Ruthlessness of Genesis
Hi everyone I’m based in the UK and was raised as roman catholic, in my early teens I changed denominations and became Anglican. Recently I’ve been re reading the bible as I came away from religion for a while. I’m really struggling but not doubting god, why in genesis does it state that every heart is evil from childhood?
I also don’t understand that even though there was evilness, why those who lived before the land was wiped clean of all living didn’t get a chance to be saved as we do today, I can understand why Noah and his people were saved because they were righteous, but why was it that Noah wasn’t told to spread gods word and turn everyone towards god?
I’m sorry if this sounds silly, I’m just struggling to understand.

Genesis is pretty rough. I'm Roman Catholic, and Father Mike does a great job explaining Genesis in his Bible in a Year series (which isn't just for Catholics!)
Genesis 8:21-22
And when the Lord smelled the pleasing odor, the Lord said in his heart, “I will never again curse the ground because of man, for the imagination of man’s heart is evil from his youth; neither will I ever again destroy every living creature as I have done. While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night, shall not cease.”
This is about original sin, which we are all born with. The flood was a baptism of the world.
I don’t think it necessarily means that every child is personally evil; rather, it describes humanity as having a tendency toward sin and shows that, by Noah’s time, violence and corruption had become widespread.
Regarding the latter half, you have given me something to look into tonight so I will come back with my understanding for that bit
