My 14-month-old baby is not talking yet and hasn't said their first single word. However, they are babbling, pointing, waving, following instructions, and know a few baby signs.
My husband says it's normal since every child develops at their own pace, but my mother says he is late as he should have said a few words by now.
I've been paying close attention to them, and they have reached all other milestones. I don't know whether I should be concerned or just keep observing for now. Has anyone else been through this?

I think if you’re really concerned, you should bring it up with your pediatrician

By 12mths is day between like 2 and 6 words is typical BUT it doesn't mean that there's something wrong with your baby if they haven't. You have to look at their other milestones too! Like by 12 mths, my 1st had 30 words. But did not walk until 14mths. She didnt even start crawling until 10mths and babies that were like 7mths were crawling circles around her ass🤷🏾♀️. At 2? She was coloring in the lines. She was using scissors. But...she couldn't jump with both feet off the ground at the same time. She wouldn't climb things? Shes 3.5 now and you'd never be able to tell she had some "struggle areas". Obviously mention your concern to the pediatrician and see what they say and ask about early interventions♥️

Boys are usually later than girls. My friend's son is 16 months and he only Barely says a few words.

My daughter was only saying mama dada at that point and then she turned 18 months had a vocabulary boom. Every kid is different. I don’t think you need to be concerned yet but if it’s really making you uneasy speak with your pediatrician.

From a speech stand point more than likely your pediatrician will blow you off. My daughter was the same exact way and check up after check up our Pediatricians office and various other staff there blew off our concerns. Eventually, we went against their advice and took our daughter for a speech evaluation. She’s now been diagnosed with a speech delay and we go to speech therapy twice a week. Now she is 2 1/2. We are still in speech therapy and she is able to communicate extremely effectively with us. I know this may sound very forward but don’t wait too long if you genuinely have these concerns. A lot of times early intervention in key and your SLP can teach you a lot of techniques to do at home to get baby talking. Now that we have seen several SLPs I have come to the understanding that pediatricians will wait soooo long before they offer intervention especially if kiddo is meeting other milestones.

My daughter didn’t have any words at that point. She had around 10 words at 17 months and around 50 at 18 months. It was just a sudden explosion of words.

It’s so so normal. Mine did first words with context about 16/17 months - prior to that it was pure babble but he was a great communicator through other means.

My LO is the exactly same. 13 months no words but babbles etc. I was a little worried to but after reading the above comments it seems pretty normal xx

Hey, SLT here. There’s lots of factors to consider and if you are concerned then I would reach out to your local health team. However if you want to help bubba, then I suggest talking about everything. And I do mean everything.
Examples:
“Oh look a bird, a grey bird. The bird is flying. Do you see the bird.”
“I’m cooking pasta, we’re going to have pasta for dinner tonight. The pasta has tomato sauce.”
“Wow a car. Can you push the car? It’s a red car. It’s a fast red car.”
You get the gist? Try to not ask questions that expect a response because this adds pressure to your child to speak when they may not be ready. Just comment on everything and it will bombard your child with language. Children generally understand before speaking so it will help. Also nursery rhymes and reading picture books—especially repeating the same books/rhymes, it adds consistency and security as well as keeping up with familiar language for them to learn.

Hi, I’m in the same boat currently with my 13 month old. He does exactly what you mentioned but hasn’t said one work yet not even mama or dada. Has yours said mama/dada yet?
How long did you rest after a straight forward vaginal birth?
(Asking for this birth as I know c-section/complications require a different level of recovery).
I’m interested to know how quick you returned to household chores and general ‘mumming’ following birth of baby.
I love the idea of the 5-5-5 (5 days in bed, 5 days on the bed, 5 days around the bed) for rest, but I’m curious to know if anyone actually stuck to this or something similar, or if guilt got in the way!

When did your babies become happier ( if they were a fussy baby).
My baby just seems unhappy a lot of the time, if he’s not asleep or feeding he’s usually fussy and crying.
He has moments where he’s calm and engaging and it’s lovely but mainly he does just seem unhappy.
Does it get better? He’s 9 weeks old.

My 5 week old seems so unhappy. I don’t understand whats wrong. She hates being put down. She sleeps fine for the first half of the night, after her night feed she spends the next 3 hours grunting and squirming. She will have a bottle then squirms and cries after it, but not always. I feel like i’m failing her.
