Baby reflux

My baby is one month old and is suffering quite badly with silent reflux after every feed. It keeps him awake for hours and it’s heartbreaking to watch him arch and thrash around in pain.

I’ve done all the feeding adjustments (laid back feeding, keeping him upright after every feed, infacol)

Our health visitor advised it’s probably time to see the GP, but my breastfeeding consultant told me to leave going to the GP as a last possible resort because the medication might give him constipation.

Has anyone been through something similar? Anyone used the infant gaviscon the doctors will prescribe and did it help?

My baby girl had reflux and colic, we used gaviscon from the GP and it was honestly such a game changer so my advice would be just go for it. We do half a sachet in bottles and haven’t found she suffers with constipation at all but we do also give her probiotics every day which helps things

My baby uses gaviscon infant and there wasnt too much change so they had to change to aptamil pepti milk as the particals are further apart so easier to digest. This helped hes nearly 1 and still sick a few times after each bottle but definitely nowhere near as much. You do have to push quite a bit for the milk though

https://amzn.eu/d/01Bt0kCU - I highly recommend reading this book. It explains very well what's within normal infant physiology (baby reflux *is* for the most part a normal phenomenon) and what's pathological and how to choose the right way to deal with it.

As for GPs, broadly, I would agree with your LC. Yes, gaviscon can give constipation but, more ominously, lots of GPs still go straight to omeprazole which shouldn't be used in infants at all except for the most severe cases of GORD where nothing else has worked, because it can cause severe long-term side effects such as osteoporosis, but they don't tend to inform parents of that!

Positive thing is you're most likely towards the peak of it and it should start getting better soon! Xx

rare type of CMPA

My 12 week old baby has been diagnosed with non-lgE CMPA FPIES which essentially means he has a delayed reaction to the cows milk protein in formula but the reaction is severe. He will vomit a couple of hours after a feed then go pale and floppy but it can also trigger shock and sepsis if not managed. We’ve thankfully been able to get him onto Aptamil pepti 1 and that seems to be agreeing with him so far but our paediatrician says it’s very rare. She only sees it once or twice a year and she’s a private paediatrician and the head paediatrician of 2 sister hospitals.
Has anyone else’s little one got this or has anyone else come across this? Feel so lonely in this period of motherhood and so lost.

Dummy or Thumb

My baby girl is 7.5 weeks and we’ve never given her a dummy. This is because our 3yr old still has his at times and it’s been difficult for him to give it up entirely (he used to only have it for naps/night but, got extremely sick in hospital and essentially had it in constantly and since then, he’s needed it beyond sleep).

She’s just started to figure out how to get her thumb (with a great deal of frustration beforehand).

My question is, is a dummy or thumb more problematic for the longer road? I worry if she has her thumb, we can’t take it away and also, a thumb seems more unhygienic.

What have your experiences been?

How many hours is your little one going through the night before waking up for food?

Hospital Bag

Hi everyone! How many nappies are you packing in your hospital bag? I'm having a C-section, so I'm anticipating to be in the hospital for about three days.
