Induction at St Michael
Heya! I’m currently 41 weeks and due to be induced. They told us we could get a call anytime from today until Saturday, so I was just wondering if anyone has been induced recently and when you received the call? I’ve read that they might not even call within those 3 days and could just call afterwards to check on you, which doesn’t really make much sense :/ Although I completely understand how overwhelmed the NHS is and I really feel for the staff, so I get it!
There’s nothing wrong with baby, he’s just on the smaller side. His estimated weight has gone up and down throughout the pregnancy (at one point he was around the 3rd percentile) but his last scan was normal, so I’m assuming I’m probably quite low down the queue.
Also, if you’ve been induced there recently, how was your experience? How long did you end up staying in hospital?
Maybe a bit of a niche question, but after the balloon and having your waters broken, did they put you straight on the drip or did you have some time in between to see if contractions started on their own? I’m hoping to advocate for having a bit of time to see if labour starts naturally after they break my waters (that’s what my mum did with me) but I'm worried that they might want to speed things up.

Hey, I had my induction at southmead so can’t comment on the wait time but I had the balloon, then once in the delivery suite they broke my waters and gave me 2 hours before starting the drip! They encouraged me to bounce on the ball, walk around the hospital grounds ect to get contractions going. I did get some contractions but irregularly and they started my drip after the two hours! Hope that helps!
I had preeclampsia so was in hospital (st Michaels) for three weeks. I was called to be induced at 2am. Neither balloon or pessary worked for me so they went straight to a c section! I was waiting longer than three days to be called for the induction it entirely depends on how busy they are right now though when I was in they were sooooo busy xx
In my experience, they wait but in any case it's always your choice (unless it's an emergency) so you can always ask to wait (that includes waiting longer to be induced alogether). It's not up to them to decide how quickly they bring on the next intervention. Best of luck, hope it all goes smoothly for you! Xx
I was induced a month ago at St. Michaels, I never received a call as promised by midwife, though , I started to have days of contractions on and off and I insisted through triage hotline to come to the hospital (twice) which was in the end the right decision for some medical reasons, once in the hospital they gave me time to see if contractions get stronger before they started the oxytocin, if you can wait until the weekend is over, do it, a midwife told me they operate on half of staff during weekends and I painfully experienced that. I was also bottom of urgency so I was pushed down the line for basically everything, even could not get an epidural because the only anesthetist was called to an urgency and came hours too late, same for stitches was moved in and out theater twice as there was always another urgency and not enough staff, in the postnatal recovery they forgot to bring me food and never changed sheets, I got my pills on the desk- that’s it, level of care I received.
