Hi has anyone tested positive for GBS (Group B Strep) either now or in a previous pregnancy?? I gave in a urine sample and got a call back today from my docs that I’m GbS positive. Just wanted to know what that meant for baby and how it changed labour.

Hey I have this and it just means you will be on antibiotics during labour so you have them every four hours and potentially on a drip for about 30 mins depending on how fast your labour is. Nothing to worry about it’s very common you can still have a very normal natural birth just won’t be able to give birth in a midwife only led unit xx

It's actually really good that you know... I was positive in the 2nd pregnancy as didn't know and my little boy was really poorly when he was born. 3rd time round they just gave me some antibiotics once my waters broke and kept us in for 12 hours after birth to do checks on my little girl every 2 hours... She was totally fine x

I had this with both, first child was fast labour and didn’t have time to give me the antibiotics and she was fine just had to keep an close eye on her. Pretty much the same with my second child as well. My midwife told me it’s quite common to be a carrier of the group B strep

Thanks for the reassurance ladies means a lot 🙏🏼

Yes. It was no big deal. They gave me meds at the hospital. It was super easy. Honestly I forgot about this until I saw your post and I gave birth 4 weeks ago! Honestly, don't stress. Baby and me are completely fine 🙂

I’ve recently tested positive for this but it’s soo good that we know! I’m only 15 weeks but I’m consultant lead and she said I’ll have to have anti biotics via drip 4 at least 4 hours before delivery and if the antibiotics arent completed then baby will have a drip ASAP incase they are infected! My cousin had it and baby had to have drip also as she labours really fast but she said it all went well and was really calm xx

I had it also and was induced so I already had a constant IV for pitocin, they just gave antibiotics occasionally throughout my 24 hour labor and baby was fine.

I did a heap of research around this during my first pregnancy. Quite a lot of women test positive in pregnancy but test negative at birth. Like it's an infection. Often your body fights it off and you're not positive any more at birth. But...they probably won't retest you so they'll operate under the assumption you are still positive. So they will give you IV antibiotics in labour.
It can go the other way too. You can test negative in pregnancy but positive at birth. That's more dangerous for baby. However only a small percentage of babies get sick from it. But they can get very sick.
Tldr the test isn't very accurate, they should do a quick results test while you're in early labour but they don't, but there's tons of reasons mums get antibiotics in labour. I had it because waters broke but I didn't go into labour within 24 hours.

I was tested but didn't know I was positive until AFTER my daughter was born!!! The lab failed to let my doctor know. They didn't do anything for us after they found out. Hope all goes well for you and congratulations 👏😊
