Very normal my baby went weeks without pooping and he’s strictly breastfed

Avatar

Completely normal, don’t be alarmed if you have nights where she seems inconsolable, sometimes they need to poop just can’t and it gets painful. Try massaging her belly it may help! Good luck mama

Avatar

What kind of food?

Avatar

Are you nursing? Or feeding formula? When I was still in the hospital the baby took a while to poop and the nurse told me to wipe his butt with a little more pressure because expressing that are wld help and it sure did. Or else he wldnt hv been able to come home

Avatar

Yep..working on getting the Marconium out. It's all amniotic fluid and can be a little sticky. Breast fed babies have a slower gut travel time..the breast milk digestes longer so poops arnt as frequent. As long as baby is eating well and resting comfortably you r good 👍

I panicked when this happened. Mine went 4 days then blew out 4 outfits on the 5th day!

My son had a problem with pooping as well. What I didn’t know about was jaundice which is when they start to turn very yellow. He was hospitalized for it 4 days after he was born. So just watch out for that, they get rid of something in their poo (I forget what it’s called) and if they don’t get rid of it it can cause jaundice.

Totally normal

This has happened a lot with both of my babies at some point.
The pediatrician always said not peeing is more of something to be concerned about. My newborn right now will have days she doesn’t poop

Avatar

As long as there are lots of pee diapers it’s fine :)

Avatar

My brother said his second only pooped once a week! Efficient digestive system I guess?

Avatar

Street the meconium irregular poops are normal for a while.

Avatar

My little boy after his black poo didn't poo for almost 5 days, and continued that untill he started solids - every 5 day x

Avatar

My paediatrician told me that it was normal for newborns not to poop regularly and that sometimes they can go even as long as two weeks without having a poop. He was more concerned with pee. As long as they still have a lot of wet diapers, they’re okay.

Avatar

I always panicked with this when my little one was a newborn but she always seemed to go on the 4th or 5th day, don't freak out too much a little rub on the tummy or some leg movements( bicycle legs) doesn't hurt... I even used some gripe water on the end of her dummy or a little bit in some water worked a treat whatever you're comfortable with but I'm sure you got this 💪🏾

Avatar

Save yourself the ER trip. Because I definitely went to the ER. Try the body movement exercises like bicycle legs, prune juice + water( if you’re comfortable), thermometer slightly up anus. But also they more than likely will not poop every day all the time. I just write my daughters poop so I can see which days she goes to see her pattern.

Avatar

My baby after have his first back poos, didn't poop for almost 5 days. Doctor/ midwifes weren't too worried. He been the same since (untill solids) every 5 days xx

Avatar

My daughter only pooped once a week until she was about 6 moths.

Avatar

If you are breastfeeding it’s especially normal because breast milk is very efficient and the body uses almost all of it so there’s minimal waste. My son went 5-7 days a couple of times and I freaked out. Give the little one an ounce of pear juice once or twice that will help.

Avatar

Just wait one more day. If he doesn't make a BM go to your pediatrician. It will be okay more than likely but the pediatrician will definitely be able to help you. The alarm is usually when it has been 3 days. Or they aren't producing wet diapers as well.

Avatar

Vaseline on a Q-Tip, up the bum. Worked like a charm, if anyone ever needs to help their little one poop.

Mine took 2 days after birth, it sucked.

Avatar

I took my baby to the chiropractor because she kept on having bad gas and was going about 5 days between pooping. After her first adjustment she started pooping multiple times a day.

Avatar

I was worried about this as well with my newborn, she’s strictly breastfed and only poops every 3-4 days, she’s now six weeks old and still sticking to this.. Pediatrician isn’t worried so I’m not either!

Avatar

If baby is breastfed, this is normal. My baby is almost 7 months and poops every few days. Pediatrician said it's fine. Give it a few more days.

Avatar

this is normal! my lo did that when he was born for a couple of days and i asked his doctor and she said it was normal for them to not poop everyday and even up to a week

Avatar

I’ve always been concerned with my baby girl she’s 7 weeks now but she was only pooping once a week 😅 I thought something was wrong but been told it’s normal and when she does poo it’s a big blow out almost like she’s been backed up 😅

Avatar

My baby only pooped once a week untill 2 weeks ago, she’s almost 4 months now. doctor said it’s normal and it was just her little routine, every baby is different! She now has 1-2 dirty nappies a day! If you are worried contact your gp for advice to even ease your mind! Xx

Avatar

Call your provider.

Avatar

My midwife said doctors won't be concerned until its been over 10 days without a poop. So don't worry just yet x

Avatar

Sorry I wanted to reply to Shalee not to your message. I didn't want to say you are wrong. Is true newborns don't necessarily poo every day. But they poo a lot in the first days, and Shalee's baby is only 2 days old, so I think would be best in this case to call the MW

Avatar

I was told until 5-6 days they should have a poopy diaper for each day they are old (1 day 1 diaper 2 day 2 diaper)

Avatar

Are you breastfeeding

Avatar

Not all babies poop in the first days. Our daughter didn’t poop for 4 days. We were worried sick as new parents especially since we took to the internet.. Went to pediatrician for 3 day wellness check and she put us at ease. Warning.. when they poop it will seem explosive!! Breastfed babies don’t necessarily poop everyday. If you are worried, keep checking in with the doc until you are not! Believe me when I say you will miss the no poop days, lol

Avatar

My baby was combination fed. It was every 2-4 days for first few weeks and when she did go it’s was just explosions 😂 outfit change included . Paediatrician said it was normal for combination fed and breastfed babies. As she for older it was 1 in almost 5-6 days until she regulated

Avatar

My baby is 7 months old now, but when he was born, he passed meconium in the first I think 48 hours and then he didnt go for 9 days. I went to see a pediatrician and she said some can go 10 - 14 days without pooping. She said if he seems well and his belly is not hard when you gently push on it, it's okay. I breastfeed exclusively.

Avatar

It's normal after the first week or two, but with a two day old I would check with my pediatrician.

Avatar

I found out from my midwife that breast fed babies can go upto 10 days without pooping, but formula fed babies can go upto 3 days xo

Avatar

Hi there my new born on day 4 did not poop till day 8 . The pediatrician said it was normal . He started to poop on day 8. If he goes further without pooping say more than day 5 consult a pediatrician. Currently my new born is 3 weeks.

Avatar

Does she seem unsettle or like she's straining she could be constipated maybe try some coloxyl drops if she doesn't poo by tomorrow

Avatar

I'm currently in the same situation, was there anything you did @shalee, my baby is 5 days old and hasn't pooped since she was 3 days old. She keeps passing gas though and seems uncomfortable when she eventually passes gas

Avatar

Very normal

Avatar

Exactly!most are normal.

Avatar

I was told that for both breastfed and formula fed newborns, sometimes not going for up to 5 days is normal. 🤷🏻‍♀️ If you are concerned you can always call your pediatrician, but if baby doesn’t seem to be in any discomfort I wouldn’t worry too much. My ebf son never skipped a day until he started solids, but my formula son (who started as a bf/combo baby) went every other day in the beginning.

Avatar

Its normal... as long as they are peeing...trust me the poop will come & when it does...watch out!

Avatar

I was always under the impression that a baby under 2 weeks should be pooping daily

Avatar

Prunes!!!

Avatar

My newborn didn’t poo for four days. Went to see an osteopath who also is specialised with gut health. I am exclusively breastfeeding so she put me on probiotics tablets and prebiotic powder. Baby’s belly is no longer hard, she isn’t uncomfortable in the evenings and pooping 1-2 times a day. Seek medical advice before taking anything. I took a more natural approach.
She did talk about cutting dairy/gluten etc but I was having none of that!!!
She also gave her a massage to check over her joints etc because she had a traumatic delivery and had a tight pelvis and right shoulder and would always be so stiff and rigid but now she’s way more relaxed!!

Avatar

As long as baby is regularly doing wees. But massage baby tummy if your baby is constipated and if you are formula feeding some formulas with high iron cause baby’s to be constipated

Avatar

Completely normal if ypur baby is breastfeed!! Some babies use of the nutrients and therefore there's nothing left to remove. I would record all of the movements and share with your Dr. My son pooped everyday a few times and my daughter would go days sometimes without pooping. Any more than 2-3 days and I would get concerned that she was constipated but I called the health line and found out that it was normal for breastfeed babies. If you want to see a poop just give some formula and it will come. Lol

Avatar

Completely normal, sometimes my little girl didn’t poo for 3 days, she gets uncomfortable but the doctors have said that it’s normal and they won’t worry/give her anything unless it’s been a week

Not drinking

I’m going crazy. Baby born at 2.26kg. Slow to put on weight. This last week hasn’t put on any. Been trying to feed him at night and he’s not interested at all. Fast asleep. During day he will have 5 minute gulps and that’s it. He don’t cry for milk. I’ve got to keep offering to him. I try to offer it every hour but I don’t know what I’m doing. HV said nutrition comes after 5 minutes so I should pump first and then give him. I find it so hard. I tried to pump one boob nothing came. The other abit came. Tried giving him express he’s not interested in that too. Sometimes he will go for a longer a feed but not long at all. He’s 4 months and is currently 5.46kg. I have no family or friend support here and wish I had a cook, cleaner and nanny to help with everything so I can concentrate on the little one. I don’t know what’s wrong with him but I’m loosing it. It doesn’t help that my also stressed generally about my relationship and life circumstances. Any advice that will work. Any comfort you can give. I’m fed up. Is this regression - not feeding. He’s fast fast asleep. I’ve been trying to push the nipple in but that mouth is closed shut. I took some clothes off. Changed his nappy but he’s still asleep. Please help

Leaky nappy help

What nappies are you using to stop leaks?? We use pampers ultra dry size 5, and for the past few nights he has lashed through and we’ve had to completely change him during the night. Last night he leashed through twice!! He sleeps on his front and stays leaks through at the top of his leg where the tabs connect. Didn’t know whether to size up, he has a bit of a belly on him but he’s smack in middle of weight guidance so shouldn’t need too

5.30am wakeups 😫😴

My 15 week old has started waking up about 5.30am and is really hard to settle back down - it’s like he thinks it’s time to wake up for the day. He used to go to bed at 9pm and was up at 8am but now he goes to bed between 7.30-8pm as he’s knackered by then but waking up at 5.30am😴. Any advice to get him to sleep a little longer in the morning?! Even an extra hour would be lovely 🤣
