I was doing my cat's bedtime routine which involves tooth brushing as he's lost 75% of his teeth while he was a stray. He hates it and as he was struggling to get away one of his molars sliced over my middle finger!
I immediately ran it under water for 3 mins but I'm so worried as I'm 6 weeks pregnant and I'm on my own (my partner is in the US for another fortnight). If anyone has any advice I'd be very grateful... At the least I was going to book an appointment with the GP first thing tomorrow, but would you be ringing 111? Or not really anything to worry about? š

If he's got his vaccines and stays mostly indoors I definitely wouldn't worry. I'd just keep it clean.

My sisters a veterinary nurse, she would recommend any cat bite you should call the doctor. Cats mouths hold a lot of bacteria.

Iām a vet nurse. Please see your gp. We are bitten alot in work and usually get prescribed antibiotics from the gp just to be safe, regardless of if itās an indoor/outdoor cat x

The exact same happened to me when I was coming up to 16 weeks, it only scraped the first layer of skin and there wasnāt much bleeding but the next day I woke up and I couldnāt move my hand/fingers (the cut was on my knuckles). I went to the walk in centre and they told me to go to A&E because there were no doctors at the walk in and only doctors can prescribe antibiotics during pregnancy. I was worried that the infection would affect my baby but I was told that the infection would only stay local to my hand and therefore have no affect on him luckily! My advice would be to see how you are in the morning, it would be that itās absolutely fine and just feels normalš

Thank you everyone. I'm going to call the GP first thing tomorrow re: bacteria/tetanus. I'm a dental nurse so well versed in infection and sepsis symptoms so if I suspect it's going dodgy I'll seek more urgent care. Thanks again, I was panicking but it's looking ok right now xx

My cat got her foot caught in the radiator a few months ago, I would have been about 18weeks at that point. When I tried to free her she lashed out at me because she was panicking. She bit and scratched my hand. The wounds were only little and didn't bother me, but after a couple of days a red ring had appeared round one of them, (sign of infection) so I ended up on antibiotics for it. Apparently cat bites/scratches are very prone to becoming infected I was told. Xx

Hi Lucy , I got bitten quite deeply by a friends cat once and the morning after my hand around the bite area was very red, hot to the touch and swollen so I called 111 who said to go to A&E for antibiotics within the next 12 hours. I don't think I would have asked for medical assistance if it wasn't for the reaction I had, but it's definitely an eye opener that it's possible to have adverse affects from something as minor as a kitty bite. Hope all goes well at the GP! X

I got bitten on my keg by a random stray but called gp and as I'm up to date with tetanus jabs it was okay. Call gp when you can and they'll be able to advise you!
