My advice would be to try and do some sort of placement if your university offers it with your course! I was lucky and managed to get a placement though my university at a local NHS lab and never left. The amount of new graduates without any experience is quite scary, and can take alot longer to then gain the experience needed for a professional level job. At the time it can be a pain and feel unnecessary but it really is worth it in the end

Placement isnt really possible i dont think, im repeating 4 year 1 modules and will end up having to graduate a year late as it is, and j cant do it alongside as the childacre i have only just covers my uni hours and i cant get extra hours, but thank you for the advice 🙏🏻 x

I recommend to keep on top of the study and coursework as much as possible. When you fall behind its very had to catch up. Make the most of it when kids are napping or at nursery/school, or any spare time in between such as travelling. Also use coloured pens and highlighters to make notes and emphasise important info, for me it helps things stick in my mind. Note cards may also help for revision. If you dont have time to read the text books you could get an audio version if available. I know on kindle and some other apps if there isnt an audio the device/app can generate audio but its a bit of a robotic voice but would be handy to listen to audio if you are taking little one for a walk in a pushchair or traveling to and from uni. Use all the help they can you give you if it’s extensions or sending drafts just always apply for any and every help from the lectures and tutors

I wish I did a placement year for the Ibms portfolio, without it you cannot practice as a biomedical scientist and will have to slave your way up as a lab assistant and then be hopeful you get a permanent job in an accredited hospital lab. Best to avoid all this headache and try and do it within a sandwich year after 2nd year and before 3rd if you’re able to. Happy to help with any application and interview processes.

Join an accredited lab as an MLA /bsw it’ll be a band 3/4 job but you’ll get the opportunity to do your portfolio. I know microbiology in bedford hospital currently have a vacancy.

One bit of advice from our hospital is if you can’t find a placement enquire about bank shifts at your local hospital, we are always looking for bank workers and it gets your foot in the door if a permanent position comes up :) x
