I've heard this sometimes happens with breastfed babies and some mums clean their baby's gums with a soft clean cloth to combat bacteria build up
My LG is still occasionally breastfeeding and from when she was little her breath would smell sweaty after she had fed. Very odd
Maybe some reflux causing it?
You’re supposed to clean their gums. If you haven’t that is my guess of what is smelling.
Clean the mouth out especially tongue. Get those baby face washes wet and use your little finger to scrape and clean the tongue out.
@Stormy from what age? Never heard of it but this is my first baby
Not sure if this mouth/gum cleaning is a US thing but never been told or advised to do this in the UK
@Debbie I see lots of articles from the UK on this. Doctors dont tell most people in the US until baby is diagnosed with a yeast infection of the mouth but it only makes sense due to the bacteria in there to clean it
@Holli I’m not sure exact recommendations but I did it from day one. I was breastfeeding so I didn’t want to chance a yeast infection from his mouth spreading onto my boob because that seemed quite painful and a handful of mothers I know have gone through that. Plus it desensitized him to it and now he brushes his teeth like a champ and has never given us issues with teeth brushing
@Debbie do you mean that y'all never heard of cleaning out the baby's mouth ?? Am African and even the most remote village people do this and they are the ones with the most beautiful teeth and smiles that they dont even need the dentist. Once they teeth they even use traditional methods for teeth and mouth cleaning, no toothbrush or paste needed. Very interesting that the UK doesn't encourage this very basic need.
@Lav yep uk, and no one has ever mentioned this 🤯 just that you need to sterilise everything like bottles and pacifiers. I thought until they have teeth you wouldn’t need to clean the mouth but I guess it does make sense to clean it anyway 😳 I’ve been cleaning his mouth for a day or so now and the smell has gone so it must have been that
Wow. Very odd @Holli but glad that bub is feeling better now and less chance of mouth irritations , in that he is fresher. They are just like us only microscopic lol. Another thing that Africans do which I noticed the "1st world" doesn't and is important imo is giving water to baby from day 1. There is alot of struggling babies with constipation and tummy pains and dehydration and so many other related issues due to the teaching that babies can only have water after 6 months. Quite false as i never hear any african mums complaining of these things. Just an observation I made. I understand if you're against it as well.
@Lav yes, only advice is to start brushing teeth when they first appear but apart from that nothing! It’s so odd how information differs depending where you live!
I’ve noticed my girls breath sometimes smells funny when a tooth is breaking though. She didn’t have any before starting solids though so may be different x
