Big baby

I've just had my 34 week growth scan (today is 34 + 1) and was told my baby boy is in the 92nd percentile - and currently about 2.9kg. Average weight at this point is 2.3kg - according to an app I'm using 2.9kg is the usual weight for a baby at 36.5weeks. They don't adjust due date based on size though. I am/was planning on a natural birth but now not so sure... I'm wondering about opting for an induction between 38 and 39 weeks if we haven't gone already. I think I'm just experiencing a bit of anticipation anxiety

I have my scan on Wednesday because my gp is thinking she’s a big baby, I’ll be 34 weeks tomorrow too !!

I’m 32 weeks and have gestational diabetes so chance of my bubba getting bigger is high. I am being closely monitored and have frequent hospital/Dr visits and ultrasounds. My baby has a bigger belly then what it should be at the moment and chances are I’ll be induced at 38 weeks unless she decides to enter the world a little earlier. The anxiety is real and the unknown is scary, but I have faith in my medical team that they will support me and my baby through to a healthy and successful birth. 🙏🏻🤍

I’m having to have another growth scan at 36 weeks to see how big my girl is, he’s thinking she’ll be big too and possibly have to change my birth plan. I’m 33+2 atm. I had a panic attack the night of my appointment because I didn’t want to change my plan. I’m armed with a tonne of questions for my next appointment.

I had a scan earlier at 30 weeks saying my boy is in the 98th percentile and need another one this week to confirm. However I went deep diving into the research and talking to my midwife and birth coach. what I’ve found is that most of the time even though the scan says they are big they aren’t usually accurate. Secondly even if bub is big your body is still able to go through birth with the same chance of complications as a baby of normal size. The time this is usually an issue is if there is an underlying medical condition say GD or PE. Obviously do what is best for your peace of mind and baby but don’t think you can’t go natural if that is the birth you want ♥️

Deffinetly don't put to much weight behind this. It is notoriously wrong. Unless like Tegan said they have actual measurements of body parts I got told mine would be small and they were all born over 9 pounds Vaginally is totally doable with big babies My 2nd was a vbac and I had to tears bruises anything and she was 9 pound 2 Please don't stress over it in the slightest.

I think it's more the head circumference you have to worry about to be honest.

I am the same..was told at 29weeks is a big baby, now 34 weeks and very anxious about this. If I was induced at 38weeks, technically being 2 weeks ahead she would be bang on weight. Can you request to be induced?

In my opinion and most midwives your body will be better at birthing a baby when it is ready even if it is on the big side compared to being induced to birth when your body isn't ready. Also the scans are so inaccurate. Unless your health providers are super worried I wouldn't be concerned. My baby was measuring huge and came out bang on normal. Good luck 😀

There’s some great advice above^ Youl find your birth will be more complicated if your induced. Let your baby come when he is ready and your body guide you. It knows what to do. Induction shouldn’t really be discussed as an option if your wanting a natural birth until into the 41st week.. .. and the girls are right. Scans get more and more inaccurate as we get along. Do some googling and some reading to ease your mind. Woman have been having ‘big baby’s’ for century’s.

@Emily his head circumference is massive - 95th percentile, which places him three weeks ahead of his actual gestational age. I'm kind of hoping he has had a growth spurt and won't grow too much more over the next couple of weeks so by the time we get to full term he is a little closer to normal size..

@Ashleigh yes I probably do need to trust my body. I was a massive baby - almost 11pds at birth. My mum had to have an emergency C section because I got stuck and it ended up being quite traumatic for her. I think I'm just a little fearful of that...

My Sister in law has 6 kids and will not do the growth scans because they are so wrong.with My nephew she was told he'd be 10pound and over. He was born 8.1pound. Me with my first was told she would be very large due to gd so was induced at 38weeks. Every scan I had showed her in the 50th% and she was 7.1pound but the drs said regardless of the scan she will be much bigger. So I went into hospital with all bigger clothes to find none fit and had to send people to go buy 00000 clothes. The drs and scans sizing is only a guess at best
