Disposable or reusable nappies?

Has anyone thought about/ done any research or had experience with reusable nappies? It hadn’t even crossed my mind until it was mentioned in an antenatal class last night and I feel like I owe it to Greta to at least try them 🤣

I did consider reusable diapers, but it sounds like a nightmare tbh

Keen to hear opinions. My husband wants to use them. His two sisters used them for all their kids. They both said they’re good but avoid using them in the newborn stage as the poo is to runny. They’re better when the poo is solid.

@Alicia interesting! Good to hear they got on well with them. I was thinking about using disposable for newborn stage actually as thought adding the task of washing nappies onto everything else in those first few weeks probably isn’t wise. Can you ask them how it works with the soiled nappies? Like, do they rinse them off or dispose of the poo before they put them into the washing machine? 😂

I'm considering it. We'll start out with disposable ones and maybe look at doing a mixture in the future. Some councils offer trials (ours does) so maybe have a look at that, saves you investing into them to just turn out you don't like them :)

@Selina Ah good! I think that’s my plan too! And yes actually the midwife that mentioned it in the antenatal group actually gave us info on our local councils voucher scheme to purchase them which I thought was brilliant!

I intend to use a mixture. I was really fortunate to be given a load from a colleague for free as she was just happy someone else would get use from them. I have newborn disposables for the first month or so when I will then try and transition. I feel any day I manage reusables is going to be a win! Got some fresh new liners and just need a roll of the disposable liner that goes inside them :)

I did a combo of disposable (when I was out) and reusable when I was at home, with my last and it wasn't all that bad! Back then you still had to use the plastic covers that went over the top of the resuable and they were not comfy for little ones really. Tech has come a long way now and with a little research its, they seem a whole lot better than what I was dealing with! PlUs they are super cute!! I got mine 2nd hand of fb marketplace and did my research on good brands before hand! I've got liners with the nappies and ones that have the gazzilion poppers on so they cover all the sizes! I've spent about £80 on the bout 26 nappies and liners, that will last until my little lady is potty training! I will be using disposable the 1st few weeks as I suspect she will weigh less than 8lb and so will be a tad small!

@Alicia you buy a thin liner on a roll, that is apparently flushable but that's your call. The idea is that, it's that that catches poo. You can also pin your nappy to the inside of hollow bin (with pegs) and sit it in a bucket and use your shower head to rinse it off and then just empty the bucket down the loo. (look on YouTube) America has a really good system where they can unhook the water inlet to the loo and use it as a hose and just spray poo directly into the loo! Morrisons sells specific antibacterial nappy wash, that I'm assuming is good for washing all the nappies. Though I've not used it yet!

Love love love reusable nappies. They really aren't that much harder when you're used to them, poop is honestly the last thing on your mind. We're doing a mix of cloth and Disposable for when baby is tiny and then we'll slowly move up to fully cloth once we feel a bit more human. We chose to do mostly prefolds, which are cheap (you can get prefolds and covers second hand for next to nothing) and also give good coverage. Poop before weaning is water soluble so you don't have to rinse, and then for weaning babies we'll use reusable fleece liners to catch poop and run under the toilet flush to clean it off before washing. Word of warning with the Disposable liners - they tend to bunch up and be a bit of a pain sometimes.

Also 100% recommend second hand the sheer amount of money you save is incredible. We've got a good newborn and birth to potty stash already for under £100.

I’ve gone for a mixture of the 2. I have no doubt I won’t manage fully reusable but I thought if I could use them part of the time atleast I’m trying! X

I’ll be using the tots bots bamboozle 2-part system (wrap + pad). They have day and night options for these. They also make all-in-1 nappies which are supposed to be just like disposable. Check out the nappy lady - they have an advice centre and there’s a questionnaire you can complete and they’ll offer you a personalised recommendation based on your preferences.

Wow thank you SO much for all the information and advice everyone 🙏🏼 definitely going to look into all of your recommendations and give them a try!
