Recommending Carobel, Gaviscon or anti reflux formula?

Anyone had any experience with the three? We’re currently on Aptamil anti reflux formula which is working really well for my little ones silent reflux (the majority of the time anyway!) but it’s SUCH a faff to prepare particularly on demand or if he just needs a top up so was thinking about asking the GP for carobel instead.

I mentioned it before and they suggested Gaviscon but I know that can cause constipation so was wondering if people had experience with any of them and which one they recommend. Thank you!

Prescribed gaviscon and DEFINITELY causes constipation- it’s like swapping distress from one end of them to the other. Was told that omeprazole has to be prescribed by a paediatrician rather than a GP?!

Yeah that’s what I thought, I’ve seen so many people mention they had gaviscon then caused constipation so defo trying to avoid that if possible! My GP said they’re happy to prescribe omeprazole if that’s the route I’d like to take (we were referred to a paediatrician and dietician to see if he had cows milk allergy but as it was not that we are now back with the GP so that might be working in my favour). Just want to try the least invasive step possible before going to meditation

I definitely wouldn’t give Gaviscon. I was told if I didn’t take Gaviscon then they wouldn’t help me so I tried it and my wee one is honestly 10 times worse. I’ve been on to the doctors and all they tried to do was put her on a laxative long term which I told them no, that’s not a solution. I’m going to push for something else to be prescribed x

We used Carobel for a bit, which we were buying OTC. It’s SO hard to find though. Our pharmacist was meant to order some in for us and he wasn’t able to get any 🤦‍♀️ so just keep that in mind. But it does work well as a thickener

Gaviscon was the worst thing ever, the constipation and painful poops were horrific and so much harder to deal with!!

I feel like gaviscon does help with the reflux- did you switch to something else?

Avatar

it helped her with the reflux but the other problems it causes isn’t worth it. I’ve not switched yet, had to take her off it on Thursday with how bad it was. The doctors were supposed to phone me back on Friday (spoke to them twice already that day) and they didn’t so I’ve been left over the weekend without anything. I’m wanting Ranitidine or Omeprazole for her though. I’ll be speaking to the doctors first thing tomorrow and see what they say. Their solution was to put her on a laxative long term which I’m not ok with

laxative is what the pharmacist told me too- seems insane that they use gaviscon as first choice in the knowledge it causes problems just to throw more meds at??!

I’ve not used the recommended 6, I typically use one in the morning and a couple during the evening, been on it since Monday and his shits have looked painful and are really thick like porridge 🤢

Avatar

yeah it’s absolutely nuts! I said it was going to do this but they just don’t seem to give a shit.y doctor didn’t even believe that she had reflux, was a joke.

Aww no bless him 😭 I have her one in a bottle yesterday as her reflux is awful but she ended up just screaming in pain all of last night so I’ve not given her any today, not worth it. My wee girl was passing solid poo, was honestly awful 😢

Avatar

wow! I’m glad it’s not that bad for him although how long was she on it? Maybe he’s not out of the woods…

Avatar

she was on it from Monday too so was only a few days and had such an affect. She already had some constipation though. Hopefully your wee one will miss out on that

Just a note that if you start using Carobel then make sure your on size 2 (or bigger) bottle teats!

We started with carobel and it actually gave my LG really bad stomach ache and she was just uncomfortable. We then went onto gaviscon for 2 weeks and the constipation was awful! Just dealt with one problem and made an even worse one! 😞 GP has now prescribed omeprazole, doesn’t seem to be doing anything at the moment but has only been a couple of days xxxx

My little girls was (not anymore) on infant gaviscon. She was on it for 6 days before I called the DRs and we reviewed it. Reason why she is off it is because it made her SO constipated, she was screaming and crying (and I mean….. I would t be surprise if the next road could hear her!) when passing a poo. The poo was really formed and like a normal human formed pop which was far too much for her to try and push out. It was hurting her so much. We tried to lessen the dose but the reflux was still there and so was the constipation and so it had to be stopped.

My daughter has been diagnosed with CMPA and is now on Nutramigen. The reflux os still there (infact I was covered in vomit today) but she is better on the milk.

I’ve noticed that she vomits more if she has more mucus and so I’m talking to the DR about that on her 8 week check.

How much does your baby eat

Hello,

How much does your baby eat?

My boy is 4 months (17 + 5 weeks) and he weights 7kg (born 3.5kg)
Sometimes I have feeling he is eating too much…
From yesterday I had to start giving him more food as he started crying after food and asking for more. (100% formula)
He eats around 1.3L in 24 hours (6 feeds with 5 being during the day and 1 overnight) . On internet it says baby can eat 150-200ml per 1kg body weight so in theory my baby can eat max 1.4L so it would tell me he is not eating too much… just on higher end.
Then on internet it says baby shouldn’t eat more than 32oz (900ml) in 24 hours. So I’m a bit confused…

Cheap Car Seat

Hi all,

I need a cheap car seat for my mums car just for when she looks after my daughter incase she needs to pop out.

I ain’t particularly concerned over safety because it’s literally for emergencies only, as she plans everything around childcare - but I need something just incase she needs to go out.

Ideally looking for something under £80 - my daughters nearly 2 x

Not sleeping (i need help!)

I’m desperate! My 7 month old has been a terrible sleeper for a while but seems to be getting worse, he’s sleeping every 2/3hours throughout the night then taking over an hour to get back to sleep and I’ve tried everything to help him sleep longer throughout the night, I’ve extended his wake windows, offered him extra ounces of formula before sleep, we have a white noise machine, I’ve tried patting him, rocking him and even tried to techniques to help him self sooth and I even try co sleeping and nothing seems to be working that helps him sleep longer😩 And I’m starting to really struggle mental health wise as I’m not sleeping due to the constant wake ups! I need help I’m desperate 😩
