Hi, I’ve got a planned c section next week (it’s my second). For my first I didn’t have gel nails done but this time I spoke to my midwife and my friend who is an obstetrician who both said it’s completely fine. I’ve then just been on the phone to my mum (who is a midwife) who said that on their trust they would make me take it off!! Has anyone had a section recently and had gel nails?!

Have they given you any pre-op type leaflets? My hospital said in all the pre-op info to not wear nail varnish, jewellery or makeup. It probably depends on each hospital.

I think it totally depends on what the protocol is at your hospital. I’ve seen someone on here recently saying that someone had their c-section cancelled as they refused to remove their fake nails! They were too long to get the SATS clip on their finger. I know at my hospital they wouldn’t put the monitor on your toe because they put these boot things on your feet during the procedure so the toes are covered up. It’s probably a very good question to ask at your pre-op because the anaesthetist Will be able to tell you what the protocol is at your hospital

I had gels on and my jewellery, it’s down to the trust. I asked my obstetrician in advance and she put the reader on my finger and it worked fine, it’s down to the tech they have in theatre. The older stuff struggled with gel but nowadays you don’t need to read o2 levels through the nail, the machines in the room can monitor it elsewhere xx

I took it off my nails but left it on my toes. My leaflet said no nail polish and it is something they asked before taking me in so I think it could cause issues.
Also I wouldn’t have had the time or energy to get them removed afterwards haha 🤦🏻♀️

Check with your doctor. Mine said I need 1 finger with no paint!
Thanks everyone! Will see what they say at my pre-op. My friend is an obstetrician at the Trust where I’m due to give birth and she doesn’t think it’s an issue, nor does my midwife but it’s niggling at me!
