Can you have a c section instead of forceps?

We have basically been told we cannot have an instrumental birth due to the risk of our baby having brittle bones. If our baby gets stuck and they say we need forceps for example can we refuse this and ask for a C section or is it too late at this point?

I’m no expert but if baby gets stuck and they know that you cannot have an instrumental birth, you’ll probably get prepped for a section xx

thank you this puts my mind at ease! I wasn’t sure if they couldn’t do a c section if she was already too far down in the birth canal? Xx

My obstetrician who did my section told me it’s only too late for a section if she could see the head 😊 knowing you cannot have an instrumental birth I would wager they would offer a section earlier than most to prevent trauma for you both xx

thank you so much for this! Hopefully I will no longer stress!xx

They should definitely book you in for a c-section if they know you can’t have a instrumental birth! Ask midwife next time you see them xx

I would just opt for a c section personally

I had been debating opting for a C section, but I wanted to try vaginally really, I’m 36 weeks now too xx

But if they are saying instrumental isn't possible. The only way they'll know if there's trouble is if the baby is in the birth canal so if you cant have instrumental help it would be too late for a c section at that point. So I'm wondering how they are weighing up the risks here.

I’ve read conflicting things, some places I’ve read that a c section can be done and some have said it can’t because it’s too late, i don’t have another midwife appointment until next week so I guess I’ll need to wait until then to speak to her, our consultant advised to go ahead with a normal vaginal birth but I know I will want an epidural and I’ve read this increases the need for instrumental delivery

It does! I think you really need to put some questions together and ask your midwife and perhaps ring your consultant if you don't have another appointment and really weigh up the pros and cons to make an informed decision. Forceps are incredibly invasive and not gentle in the slightest not to mention the incision needed to get them in and damage they csm cause to a baby without bone issues. I'd be concerned - which is why I'd personally opt for a c section.

Baby Boy arrived Easter weekend

My baby boy was born on 2nd April at 9lbs 6oz via elective cesarean. I was desperately hoping for a VBAC but the system broke me in the end, they kept bringing me in for scan after scan and talking about his size, my age, low papp-a etc. I'm the end i wasn't strong enough against the tidal wave of the NHS but looking back i wish I had been more confident in my own ability so for all of you holding out for a vaginal labour I hope you get what you want x

My son was born with a hernia and is due an operation this week, but he's thriving and happy 😊

Leaving baby in the car

Would you leave your baby locked in the car whilst you fill up with petrol and then go and pay in the shop for the petrol? Like is that allowed? I don’t have an option to to pay at the pump where I live you have to go inside, but I don’t want to get her out the car to then go in to pay to then bring her back out to put her back in the car
