Nicu essentials for brining baby home

I know it's still early for me.little dude has made it another week in the womb. 26+3. When he gets here though, he's going to have a long stay in the nicu and while he's there im planning on having a baby shower to try and experience milestones in my pregnancy I've missed since being in the hospital.

What are some nicu essentials you found helpful when you got home? I'm trying to find stuff to add to my baby registry, but it's hard because I know my experience isn't the same as a normal pregnancy and normal newborn.

I’d recommend looking at the products they use. Sometimes NICUs have mammaroos donated and some babies don’t like it. So I based mine off most normal necessities and also what I noticed the nurses using. Also extra clothes! Some get lost in the NICU so I recommend adding some premie clothes as well as a lot of sleepers with buttons for wires to have easy access. Good luck mama! If you message me I can send you my baby registry list

Honestly, nothing really, when you finally get to take them home they’ll either be pretty much the same as any term baby or need specialist equipment eg. An NG tube or oxygen, no one can get you from anywhere with a registry.

We thought we would need an oxygen monitor as he had one the whole time he was there but when we got home we barely used it.

The only thing I can think of is a decent breast pump if you plan on breastfeeding. NICU mama’s tend to get more use out of these than most and very prem babies need the breast milk. In fact if you can try getting your flow going now that will set you in good stead.

Good on you that you’re making sure you had a baby shower though. My little one was born at 27+5 last year and I still get so sad about the stuff we missed out on.

It depends on every baby but definitely books (you can bring to the NICU and read them to your baby too!), Preemie clothes - and a few preemie outfits specially for the NICU (can be found on Etsy - they have Velcro and easy openings for the nurses). Gentle diaper rash cream, the nose Frida, saline, humidifier. Thick blankets to put over the isolette when the he's asleep and for when you do kangaroo care. If you plan on pumping put some lactation supplements on the registry like cookies and milk bags as well. Medically you wouldn't know what you needed until the first few weeks of life.

I bought this and tucked it away in a drawer, knowing it was my little hope that he would wear it and come home when he was ready. There are also tons of cute little books for NICU parents like "oops I'm early" and others that might be fun for you to have. Hey, I al thinking different types of infant inserts for stroller, baby lounger, car seat etc. Nice swaddles, a sound machine (hatch is my favorite), a baby scale (really helpful w a nicu baby!), maybe personalized blanket, a sterilizer(brezza is great). I am not sure about clothes as my baby didn’t get to wear preemie/newborn clothes in NICU and when he was out we quickly changed to 1-2m, 2-4m

My NICU had everything baby needed during his stay they even had a sound machine and also we had books donated to us by project cameron and other prior NICU moms. Other than those two things u don’t need anything different than a baby born full term as ur LO would not be going home any earlier than 36-37 weeks adjusted n thats if he or she doesn’t need any oxygen support n is bottle/nursing for every meal with no issues. My son came home a day before his due date n he is a 26 weeker. So I made my registry while i was in the hospital as well PPROM at 24+5. I added all the regular baby stuff. When he was cleared to wear clothes I bought a few preemie sleepers n onesies but he didn’t need them when he came home as he was 6lbs 14oz by then. So he wore them in NICU only. If u want to u can bring ur own receiving blankets for the isolette and as someone suggested a thicker blanket to go over the isolette top. We had that blanket donated to us as well as a couple of receiving blankets which

Lots of books to ready to baby in the NICU. Two way zippered footie pajamas to allow space for the cords. Soft Swaddle blankets to wrap baby in. A personalized baby blanket to cover their incubator. Pumping bras as a must as you will be pumping every 2-3 hours if you plan to breastfeed!! Bottle sterilizer (if you can get one that has a quick dry cycle that would be super useful- by the time I was ready to pump again my other pump parts hadn’t finished drying). We also asked for the hatch changing pad so we could weigh our baby pre and post breastfeeding sessions to track his intake and weight for growth outside of the NICU.
