Hello
I love the name Dahlia for a girl. I'm from the UK and thought the name was pronounced (Dar-lee-a). However, the official way to pronounce the name is (Day-lee-a), which I don't like.
Do you think it would be a nightmare choosing this name and correcting people how I want them to pronounce it? I love the first pronounciation... What do you think? Thank you!

I love the name but the pronounciation is Day-Lee-a (it’s a kind of flower)
That being said, Dalia (Dar-Lee-a) is a super common Arabic name for girls, maybe drop the h? Or just accept lots of people will read it wrong 😂

I always thought it was Dar-lee-a too! I think it might be an accent thing? I would still go with it and when you introduce her to everyone just pronounce the way you do! It’s a beautiful name xx

Thank you girls! I may look into the spelling Dalia too! X

Can you spell the name differently e.g. Darlia so people don’t mispronounce

I'd say dah -lia

I dont pronounce it either way, I say doll-YA or doll-ee-ya🤷🏼♀️ I’ve never heard it said day-Lee-uh. But I definitely don’t see the “R”. My mother in laws name is Darlene, maybe spell it Darlea?

Is it an English accent thing? I'm Scottish and would say da-leah

I’d say Dah-lia/Doll-ee-yuh, just like how it’s spelled. I’m from the US though

I’ve got a Dahlia the majority of people have pronounced it how I prefer Dar- Lee-a. Haven’t had to correct many people

Thank you everyone think I'm going to stick to the spelling Dahlia now and just tell people how to pronounce (that's if I have a girl)! All this fuss and it will be a boy 😂

I love the name Dahlia it was on our baby name list! I know 2 Dahlias at baby groups I go to and both are pronounced dah-lee-ah. I stay in Scotland. That was only reason I decided against the name incase some people pronounced it DAY-lee-ah.
I’ve never heard it pronounced with an R before only ever DAH or DAY.

It would definitely be annoying correcting people on pronunciation all the time, and consider when she’s grown for her whole life she will be correcting people. I think the idea for alternative spelling is ideal! It’s a beautiful sounding name

The origin of the name is both Spanish and Swedish, so the proper pronunciation is actually said as “doll-ee-ah” or “doll-yah” if you say it fast. It’s definitely an accent issue if it’s being said as anything else. The history of the name is interesting, Dahlias are a flower native to Mexico but there was a botanist who was a fan of the Swedish botanist with the last name Dahl. So he named the flower after him.
