Giving baby water

My mother in law keeps suggesting I give my 4 week old baby cooled boiled water because of the heat. Is this a thing? Or is milk enough to hydrate her? She’s formula fed.

Milk is more than enough until 6 months or the start of weaning x

In this temperature it’s not necessary. If it gets up to about 40 degrees like last summer (assuming you’re in the Uk) then you could offer 1oz if you think they’re dehydrated. It can also be offered for constipation, but again, 1oz only. But on the whole, no a baby doesn’t need water.

It can be given before 6 months to formula fed babies - we gave ours some recently to help with constipation.

We give out baby some to help with constipation. She’s 9 weeks and have been doing that for a few weeks now. The HV said it was okay to do. Just 1oz though

I think this used to be recommended - I remember my mum doing it for my sister - but now NHS advice is that it’s not needed

No water under 6 months.

@Sophie nhs website states it can be given in extreme temperatures of for constipation.

I would check NHS website - I looked earlier about my 10 month old and it did mention younger babies and hot weather!

No water needed
