Castor oil to induce labor

i’ve been seeing SOOO many women take castor oil and within hours or a day they go into labor, just curious if it worked for you or if you were thinking of trying it👀 37 weeks and contemplating it

I honestly wouldn’t. I’ve heard bad things about it

Avatar

All it did for me was make me throw up and have diarrhea. I tried EVERYTHING with my oldest.
Please don't take it. You would be much better off going to the Dr and telling them to schedule an induction. I would also recommend starting to drink raspberry leaf tea as it helps soften the cervix to prep for delivery. But please leave the castor oil alone and talk to your OB about it

It is so disgusting. My water broke at 37 weeks and I wasn’t even in labor and they tried everything and one of them was the castor oil and OMG it was so bad . I literally just took sips of it and it didn’t even work at all!!!

Avatar

My doctor told me to try everything except castor oil saying it isn't good for you

Try breast pumping . I tried that too and nothing or curb walks

Avatar

extremely, extremely dangerous. do not do it.

Castor oil is a bad idea. It induces diarrhea and not labor!

A 37wk baby is not going to have the same strengths that a 40-42wk baby will have. Our bodies are meant to carry baby/ies to 40-42wks for a reason! My midwife gave me castor oil when I was 41wk pregnant bc of pre-existing medical things that I would have probably been induced before 42wks anyways. It worked, but usually only does if your body is ready - otherwise you’ll just be sick and miserable lol.

Avatar

Personally I wouldn’t. Baby will come when baby so ready. No need to rush it.

Avatar

I did it and it didn’t do anything.

Avatar

all it will do is make you shit yourself 😅 labor will happen on its own and baby still has a couple weeks of growing left!

Avatar

My mom tried that with my brother and it just made her 💩. My brother was two weeks past his due date

Avatar

Give it a week. I really wanted to have my son early at 37 weeks and I guess he got the memo and popped out early. Sit back and try to relax and soak up the sleep. I'm sure you've heard it before but newborns don't sleep like babies lol they sleep like menopausal women in the summer when the A/C's out.

Avatar

Don’t do it my midwife doesn’t even recommend it’s the last case if baby is 42 and something all honestly
You’re just impatient for baby but the more that you relax into when baby wants to come then baby will the lung will let your body know when

try a labor shake

i did red raspberry tea pineapple 6 date and i inserted a primrose oil

baby boy was born within 24 hours 😂

best of luck

Don't try castor oil. it is really dangerous if the baby were to swallow any of it.

Avatar

Apparently it can cause baby to have a bowel movement (meconium) in the womb, can be dangerous. Not worth the risk

Avatar

So I drank it and it’s not nasty at all. But you have to have the right concoction.

I had apricot juice, lemon Vernon tea, almond butter, and castor oil. Drink it over ice.

BUT it did give me contractions but my body wasn’t ready so the contractions slowed down. My cervix didn’t ripen more. I would t do it at 37 weeks

I did hav the runs but it was very minimal. I think the almond butter helped with that. Just went to the bathroom twice. I had made sure I had extra water and Pedialyte to make sure I wasn’t getting dehydrated.

If you decide to do it just be careful and ready

Avatar

The reason it's not reccomended is because it can literally kill your baby. It induces diarrhea AND passes through the placenta, potentially causing baby to have their first poo in the womb. Baby then 'breaths' it in and is born with literal poo in their lungs. Meconium aspiration syndrome. It accounts for 5-10% of all newborn serious illness and death. Do some reading into it before you decide.

Avatar

No, I wouldn't take it. The risks aren't worth it imo

Avatar

I can’t lie I did try it even after seeing people say not to. Firstly it tastes absolutely VILEEEE like I was swallowing so hard to try not to vomit it back up lol! Did it at 38 weeks and then 39 and baby was born at 40+1 so apart from fake contractions and a bad stomach it did nothing 😂 Hindsight is crazy and I wish I’d never did it I was just sooo uncomfortable in the pregnancy. Not worth even risking when the results are so slim chance of working :)

Avatar

Honestly it made me sick and didn’t help me. What I did and seemed to work was drank fresh pineapple juice / and hear me out I did have sex. Nothing crazy ..just basic and she came the next day. So maybe it was coincidence or maybe it helped . But that’s what I did.

Avatar

It's not good for you

Avatar

Castor oil isn’t known to be safe , try using a breast pump , it worked for me ! I was 40+3 when Labour started and 40+6 when I had her

Small head reported following 20 week scan

Has anyone else had it flagged that their baby is in the bottom 5th percentile for head size?

They said everything was fine whilst we were in the scan and then I got a phone call the next day saying that it’s on the small side and we’re being referred to a paediatric specialist at St George’s. Has anyone else had this and how did things go??

Would you bring 9 week old to a family party of 35+ people?

These are also people who will want to pass the baby around and get a turn to hold him. He just got his 2 month shots two days ago

Exercise 6 weeks after c section

What movement did people start to introduce? I won’t do anything too vigorous until I’ve seen the pelvic physio as I don’t want to compromise anything that may have been extremely weakened through pregnancy! But just wondering what types of classes/movement people started off with?

Induction experience

I just wanted to share my experience with being induced as I wasn’t sure what to expect and thought it may help others.

I opted for the foley balloon which was inserted at 8am Saturday morning, I had to stay in hospital due to hypertension and protein urine however usually you can just go home once this has been done. The insertion of the balloon was not painful, was slightly uncomfortable as there was slight pressure. I actually found having the cervix checked prior to be worse (again not painful at this point just uncomfortable) The balloon had little effect and after having it removed I was still only 1cm. Removal also was pain free and hardly even noticeable.

I then had my first dose of the gel and definitely noticed a difference, I started experiencing period like cramps almost immediately however they were light and manageable. After 6 hours I had another cervix check and although my cervix was soft it was still only 1cm and was only open at the front. I had another dose of the gel and felt an increase in pressure and more intense cramping where I now required pain relief (codeine). After another 6 hours I had another cervix check and I had now dilated to 2-3cm however was still quite difficult to get all the way through so a third gel was recommended which I agreed to.

Almost immediately I noticed the difference and was in considerable pain, I had paracetamol and codeine however the contractions had now become intense and a lot closer together (around 3 minutes apart). After a couple of hours I had my last cervix check and was 4cm and taken down to the Labour ward to have my waters broken and an epidural.

I had been in my room for approx 20minutes when my waters broke by themselves and I was now 10cm and actively pushing…. There was no time for the epidural and my beautiful girl arrived into the world within 2 minutes of pushing.

All in all I would say the cramps/contractions were manageable up until the third gel where it became pretty unbearable however it was for a very short time a gas and air helped take the edge off. The worst part about any of it was actually the later cervix checks where after stimulating the cervix my contractions were at their most painful.

If I had to be induced again I would skip the balloon and opt for the gels immediately as thy had a quicker effect and I would have been out a lot sooner if I had done this to begin with.

One more thing, I’ve never believed when people say “you forget the pain once they’re here” but I can honestly say this is true. It’s been 4 days and I would do it all again in a heartbeat.
