Has anyone experienced raised ALT levels in a blood test? If so, what happened next?
My levels are quite high and we're currently waiting for a call back from the hospital. Just trying to get an idea of what could happen. TIA x

They'll look for a cause. Usually this involves a scan of your lover and screening for infections and autoimmune causes. If you've got itching it could be down to cholestasis in pregnancy. Sometimes it's as a response to infection or inflammation. X

thank you so much. We're still waiting for the call and the Dr who needs to look at the results is in theatre so it's just a waiting game right now x

ah, the joys of Sundays!

Just out of interest, are you taking pregnacare supplements? My sister had raised liver levels and it turned out to be linked to pregnacare. Apparently it’s not that rare x

oh really? Yeah I've been taking them since we found out about the baby. That's really interesting to know, thank you x

if they don’t find any other cause I would 100% recommend stopping them. I wouldn’t touch them after what happened with my sister anyway to be fair (I do appreciate lots of women take them and are fine, but it sounds like some people just don’t get on with them) x

I honestly haven't got a clue what's happened. Every blood test has been fine. They just happened to test me when I was in hospital last weekend for something completely separate a d they caught it. I'm grateful that they have but worrying slightly about next steps. Everything seems to scream preeclampsia and I'm trying not to freak out

I’ve just had a call from my midwife asking me to come for more bloods tomorrow following some they took after my 20 week scan on Wednesday.
That’s crazy you say that about pregnacare as I actually changed from the pregnare max to the mix of taking the duo omega 3 and pregnacare original! Now it’s making me think these problems have started since I started these new ones at the beginning of the month! As everything was fine before.
Would love to know what they come back to you with and hoping the best for you.
I am feeling so nervous as this is my first pregnancy and it’s just all new and scary!

if you don’t mind me asking what happening with your sister with pregnacare? I really think this could be my cause!

they did loads of tests to rule out other conditions that might cause her ALT to be abnormal and couldn’t find anything (they were testing for scary stuff like hepatitis).
She then saw a doctor who by chance had come across this situation before and they made the link between taking the supplements and abnormal bloods. My sister stopped taking them immediately and within a month or so her bloods were back to normal. She went on to have a healthy pregnancy and now has a crazy 14 month old 😆
Really hope it’s something as simple as this for you!

also I meant to add - my sister posted about her experience on here at the time, and literally so many women replied saying they’d had the same issue! Super worrying

BP was absolutely fine apparently and they have no idea what's causing the ALTs to be so high

thanks for the info! I went for my bloods this afternoon and have already got my results back and they are all back in range! And I’ve stopped taking my pregnacare since Saturday as I had missed a few days. If it is from the tablets then that’s crazy! Thanks for the advice 🥰

I find this so scary! They’re literally so expensive and people are paying extra money thinking they’re doing the right thing, when actually they could be doing damage :(
So pleased to hear you’re are back in range now, really hope they stay that way, and you and bub stay healthy 🤞🤞
