so i’m 6 days postpartum, and i started pumping my last day in the hospital… i didn’t get that much obviously cause my milk wasn’t fully in. but this morning i was super engorged so i pumped and i got 8oz on both sides. i usually do pump a lot and as a first time mom to not even a week old baby yet i heard this could be bad in the long run from how much milk i’m producing. idk so if any moms out there can tell me if this is good or bad or even any recommendations that’ll be wonderful. he also eats a lot for a newborn i can say

Being an over-producer and an under-producer both come with their own issues and you'll have people tell you both are better or worse than the other depending on their own experiences. I was a just-enougher with my first and when we got sick and my supply dipped and never recovered I would rather have had the problem of engorgement that comes with being an over-producer just for the sake of not worrying about being able to provide for my son. I can't really recommend anything without knowing your desires or specific feeding journey wishes, but I'd say do whatever makes you feel most comfortable mama. If you want to build up a freezer stash or donate your extra milk or whatever and keep producing more than your son needs, do it. Just be aware it comes with challenges like engorgement. If you want to try and regulate your production to his needs and decrease your production, do it. Just be aware it comes with challenges like the potential of unforseen illness or stressful supply dips. Gotta pick your battles.

I currently have an over supply which I am trying to lower. Currently I am almost exclusively pumping (I try to breastfeed at least once a day) because my LO is refusing to nurse due to over supply and forceful letdown.
With my first I exclusively pumped which is a lot of work so I was really hoping to be able to do a mix of pumping and breastfeeding (we start daycare soon as I go back to work).
I had some bad clogs with my first (just short of mastitis) and found that talking sunflower lecithin worked well for me as a preventative measure. I'm three weeks in with my second and no clogs yet even with the oversupply.
Like the previous answer, it's about what your goals are. Every woman and every baby is different so what works for you may not work for someone else.

I am also over producing at the moment, and I am 4 weeks postpartum. My lactation consultant says milk supply should regulate based on baby's needs by 6 weeks. Until then, she just asked me to hand express or pump when I feel too heavy. I am exclusively nursing and just pump once during the day if I need to. I'd recommend waiting till 6 weeks before trying anything to reduce your supply.

Your milk regulates as time goes, it’s pretty common to have an over supply in the beginning. I’d be more worried about it come 12 weeks pp if you’re still producing ‘too much’
