Hey everyone! Has anyone taken collagen in pregnancy, especially the liquid version or do you have any thoughts/opinions on whether it’s safe? The midwife didn’t give me a concrete answer so just wondering if anyone else has any insights?
Thanks!

I took Vital Proteins collagen (powder) pre, during, and now post-pregnancy. I would recommend to any woman, especially during this phase of life. Collagen is amazing for energy, as a protein source, skin elasticity, it keeps our uterus “juicy,” lubricates our joints, protects our guts, promotes healthy hair regrowth, and is a literal building block in creating a human. Those are my insights. 😊

Based on what I looked into, the only safety concern (that I’m aware of) is the source of the collagen. Assuming it’s from a credible manufacturer plus the fact that collagen is just a form of protein, there should be no harm for pregnancy.

I take collagen tablets now as a breastfeeding momma. I did take a break during pregnancy, not because I thought it’d be dangerous but more just cause it didn’t feel necessary. I mean It’s protein, so I don’t think it’s dangerous per se.. But I personally wouldn’t take 20 grams of it in pregnancy. Maybe more like 3, tops. Sorry that’s not of much help but that’s my 2 cents!

I took collagen before and during my pregnancy and me and my baby are fine. It’s just protein but the only thing that I’m aware you need to be mindful of is the type of collagen. Everything I read said not to take marine collagen and this is because of risk of exposure to mercury x

@Erika did you use the peptides? Marine? Or Beauty?
I'm currently taking vegan gummies and haven't noticed a thing so looking to change

I use the bovine peptides (but I’ll use the marine occasionally). I also increased my overall meat intake before and during pregnancy to better support my body and my fertility, so was increasing my collagen intake via food as well.

Im taking a powder one and I usually put it in my yogurt.

I’ve been trying to find one but all say on the back to consult with a GP but they don’t have time for questions lol x

I thought marine collagen was a no during pregnancy based on research.

You can’t get vegan collagen. What you get are ingredients that mimic collagen effects. Actual collagen (the ingredient) is always animal based. I think also the effects you see depend on age and current collagen levels. So a 45 year old with low levels may see benefits when they first go on it. A 25 year old would be a subtle siddence.

With due respect to GPs, they’re probably the last people I’d consult about nutrition.

who do I ask then? My midwife still hasn’t called me back from Monday lol x

I totally get it! It seems like you’d ask your doctor, but aside from a rare one here and there, doctors aren’t taught a thing about nutrition as part of practice. It takes some extra work, but finding an integrative/functional doc is ideal. If that’s not an option, there are some great resources out there who specialize in women’s health and pregnancy, whom you can tap through books and social media. Aimee Raupp was a game changer for me, for example. Get the information and then make your own decisions on what feels good to you. Doctors absolutely have a place on our “team,” but I don’t think they should be considered the end all be all by any stretch.

@CMc💕 most marine collogen doesn't contain mercury I've heard if it's sourced properly that's removed
