I know current recommendations are not to eat deli meats (cold meats, subway sandwiches, etc), because of higher risk of getting Listeria. But, making sandwiches for myself to eat in the morning before work is the only way I actually get a decent breakfast. I considered making vegetarian sandwiches, but they never turn out that tasty.

I sometimes eat subway but it’s rare and I always make sure they toast the sandwich so the meat can cook a little bit

I believe they explain in the book expecting better that avoiding deli meat is out dated. It's because of listeria that it should be avoided but if you were to follow the outbreaks of it from cdc website current and old ones it would be so hard to meet nutritional needs. I eat them whenever I can stomach them but I always insure they are fresh ingredients that have been stored properly. So as long as you are the one making them I feel like you have gotten rid of the worst part of the risk.

I will tell you I've ate subway sandwiches a few times already. I have been getting the buffalo chicken ones but I always get them toasted for safety sake. As far as general deli sandwich, I was craving an Italian mix so I asked my doctor who said heat the meat first then you will be fine. I did just that and that was on Tuesday and I'm completely fine and so has baby. Some ladies say just eat, I say eat but be aware.

Just throw the lunch meat in the microwave for 30 sec and that will take care of it. I've been eating sandwiches all thru the pregnancy

I’ve been eating my deli sandwiches happily if I’m being honest. I feel like there’s a higher risk of getting listeria from lettuce than deli meat these days 🤷🏻♀️

I know I shouldn’t but 👐🏾 I still eat my cold subs

I make sandwiches with lunch meat that isn't gross when heated up on the stove. For example, pastrami with sauerkraut or turkey with pesto on a toasted ciabatta roll. That's my work around because like you, sandwiches are a staple of my diet and I didn't want to eliminate them completely.

If you briefly cook the meat in a pan or microwave before making a sandwich you’re good to go!

My ob said to put deli meat in the microwave for 15 sec. Then refrigerate after and it’s safe.

I was in the same boat! For the longest time the honestly thing I could stomach was deli salami and white cheddar cheese, everything else made me throw up!

If you cook the lunch meat for a bit, that’ll kill any infection that is on the meat and then if you prefer cold sandwiches you can store it back in the fridge.
Also, you have about as much risk of listeria as you do salmonella it’s just the complications are worse if you do get it because of the pregnancy.

I sometimes eat it ; I be craving them like crazy

Listeria is essentially just food poisoning. The reason they say deli meat is because if the deli sliders are not cleaned properly it can harbor bacteria. However, I love my deli meat so I did a ton of research and you can get listeria from uncleaned veggies as well. Listeria is not all that common and I always make sure if I eat deli meat I cook it, or have wherever I’m buying it (subway, schlotzsky’s, etc.,) they cook it or heat it up !

I’ve eaten toasted and not toasted sandwiches. The only time I’ve avoided certain foods is if I’m at a gathering and food has been “left out”. Then I stick to things that aren’t produce or meat

Some Lunch meat alternative sandwich ideas that I like are are chickpea salad, blt, chicken salad, cucumber cream cheese. Of course, homemade for the "salads" (ahead of time) is best

Imo, it’s ok, I mean I literally had a Poké Bowl today. Lots of ppl have done lots worse and their babies came out fine 💗

honestly . i always just cook the meat and eat the sandwich . what baby wants baby will get . especially if its the only thing that i can eat .

Boars Head deli meat is safe to eat during pregnancy! My OB told me that it’s nitrate free. :)

I still eat subway.

i hate to say it i hope i don't sound ridiculous, but i didn't stop eating deli meats. i would get a hot sandwich when i could, but 🤷🏽♀️🥹 getting it from a trusted source was the best i could offer lmao.

Honestly, I love a good tomato basil mozz with balsamic glaze sandwich, or a pesto and mozz sandwich (I sometimes heat them up). I sometimes do avocado toast and loads of fruits on the side too. My biggest thing lately has been “breakfast tacos” scrambled eggs, and cheese in flour tortillas. I warm them assembled in foil in my toaster oven while I’m getting ready, then. I take them out, add sour cream and hot sauce (sometimes guac), then either eat it as I walk to the car or seal it and eat it in the car on the way to work. Super easy and nutritious!
