Hey yall i just need a little …. advice? Im 28weeks and i went in for an ultrasound today and found out my baby’s overall growth measurements are in the 11th percentile “but her abdominal measurements are small”. I have no idea what the 11th percentile means. I’m honestly kinda lowkey spiraling and don’t know what to do. I don’t even know if this is a big issue or not. I mean obviously something is wrong but how wrong is it, you know? The doctor told me that this isn’t something i caused but its hard to feel like that when i’m literally growing her. Can someone dumb down what the 11th percentile is for me please and thank you🥲

Mama just remember not to worry till there is something to worry about what the percentile means is your baby 11% of them are the same size as yours in gestation and 89% of them are larger than your baby is in gestation those also can be super off it’s just something they keep an eye on and they don’t usually get concerned till the percentage is lower than that they just keep a closer eye to make sure the baby is still growing like they should

So if you were to line up 100 babies in order from #1 being the smallest and #100 being the largest, your baby would be #11 in line. So on the smaller side. My baby was always between the 3rd and 19th percentile and was born at 6lbs 8oz. Small, but still healthy!

Just means she’s 11% bigger then other baby’s at 28 weeks and 11% smaller then other baby’s at 28 weeks as long as your baby’s not below the 10th they are good

Don’t be too worried, measurements are only an estimate and are not 100% accurate. They would only be worried if baby was measuring on the 5th percentile or under.
My baby was measuring around the 45th percentile (just under average) and she was born just under 10lbs! I would recommended another growth scan around 32 weeks :)

this is a good representation on how off they can be I was measuring behind in weeks but they said my baby was very large on ultrasound he was born at 41 weeks and was only 7.3 they are just basic estimates and can be off in either direction your baby can be way bigger than they say

I had growth scans every two weeks of my pregnancy and my baby was measuring 36th percentile the whole way through. She was born at 37w6d and was 5 lbs 6oz and they told me she was actually 8th percentile! She’s completely healthy! I think they’ll just continue to monitor your baby’s growth.

I swear 6 months ago I could of wrote this I was 28 weeks went for a scan and had to stay as his tummy was measuring small and so was he, one of the midwife’s actually took time in explaining to me and made me less anxious but basically what she told me was “your babies healthy he might not be average or above average percentile but for us to have these percentiles there are countless other small babies exactly like your little one”. My boy was born and was in the 7th percentile but now he’s thriving ❤️ you got this mumma

Thank you so much, i appreciate it

Baby will be okay mama, breathe ❤️
My first was “less than 10th percentile” literally, that’s what it says on my MyChart for him. I’m unsure about the abdominal measurements but I’m sure it’ll be okay.
Percentile will always be a thing, even outside the womb. They measure percentile based on average of other babies at that age (in this case gestational age). 50th percentile is average, above 50 is above average and below is below average.
My son was measuring less than 10th in my belly at 29 weeks, now he’s 4 years old and above average. ❤️❤️
Good luck mama, you’ve got this!

Thank you so much, i appreciate it

Mama, don’t stress. If your doctors office didn’t make it a topic of conversation, than you’re fine. Because when issues occur they will send you to fetal specialist (I saw one with my first born).

My baby was in the 3rd percentile til he was born. The high risk doctor thought he could have a form of dwarfism due to his long bones measuring short. Well, he came out small but he was completely healthy otherwise. Absolutely nothing wrong with his long bones, no dwarfism. Take ultrasounds with a grain of salt and remember that measurements can be off. On the flip side, being in a smaller percentile does not always indicate health issues in babies. Some are just smaller than others, and that's okay! Small babies can tend to outgrow kids their age once puberty hits is what his pediatrician told me. Don't stress mama. It's hard trust me, I know. I broke down multiple times through my tough pregnancy with baby boy. It's okay to have those moments, but keep your spirits high for the baby❤️

I don’t remember what percentile my baby was but she was measuring small my whole pregnancy , i had weekly growth scans , it’s nerve wrecking but the plus is you get to see your baby more often. I was induced 3 weeks early , she was 5 pounds 4 oz , healthy . Went home 2 days later .

My last baby was born 1 percentile but has gradually increased with time. I’m not surprised I had a small baby cause I’m small

I learned at 36 weeks that my baby was in the 13th percentile and that her stomach was on the smaller side by a week or two because they said my placenta had stopped working. Today they said i have gestational hypertension and that it makes sense now why my placenta had stopped working and why her growth to her stomach was slowed. She’d at 6 pounds and 1 oz per ultrasound though.

Try not to stress, so long as your doctor/midwife is happy with the results you’re a-ok. Keep in mind those things grow at different rates throughout pregnancy. I’m ~37 weeks with my first, and I was measuring consistently big for a while, and it slowed a lot one appointment, and then caught back up the next appointment.

I would ask the doctor to explain it to you in detail. 11th percentile in isolation means she's measuring bigger than 10 percent of babies but smaller than 89 percent of babies. That in itself is not necessarily an issue because sonogram measurements aren't always accurate and can be affected by positioning and people come in all sizes so a smaller baby might just be a little shorter or thinner. Your baby may change in percentile for every ultrasound. Ours was all over the charts ranging from 10-33 percentile with her arms and legs as small as 2-3 percentile. MFM should be able to explain to you if there's any cause for concern. When my baby had small long bone measurements, they discussed dwarfism and that they didn't feel she had it because she wasn't measuring 2 standard deviations from the mean. She came out a perfectly healthy baby who is a little tiny peanut staying around the 13-15 percentile. Try not to stress!

Hi!! Maths/stats teacher here!
11th percentile essentially just means that if you randomly selected 100 babies at your gestation and sorted them by size from smallest to largest, your baby would be 11th smallest. Not a huge deal at 28 weeks at all. Heaps of time for that to change.
It also doesn’t mean a whole heck of a lot. The difference in weight between a baby in the 10th percentile vs the 50th percentile is only about 150-200g. These aren’t huge differences. Don’t panic.

my baby girl measured & was born in the 3rd percentile, and hugh basically means out of 100 babies, only 3 of them were smaller than her. however she has continued to grow along the line of her growth chart and is thriving @ almost 18 months. they had zero concerns about her size as long as she continued to grow along that line :))

My understanding is that the pattern of growth is more important. I had my 32w scan yesterday and it showed a slight slowing of growth since 28w but they weren't even too concerned about that as they said 28w was too early to count the measurement. So they will go off the change at next scan in 2 weeks instead x
