Probably one of the most distressing aspects of going through the menopause stages is the impact it has on mental wellness. Anything from a general âlow moodâ or feeling a bit down in the dumps to a full-on black dog depression. Even those who have never struggled with their mental health can begin to feel this way, and that can be really scary. For some who have previously had depression (or indeed still have), peri/menopause can make your symptoms worse. Thanks again, hormones!
Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) can help lift your mood and take the edge off depression (as it replaces the hormones youâre losing that cause menopausal depression). But sometimes, we need a little extra help alongside hormone replenishment.
Oestrogen is a mood-enhancer, so it stands to reason that falling levels are going to affect your mood and mental health. Progesterone can also help to lift moods with some people, and yet, for others, it can have the opposite effect. We're all individual, and what works for some people to improve mental wellness isn't going to work for everyone.
That's why it's important to have a tailored approach to your menopause - so that you can be the best YOU!
There are other things that you can do to improve mental wellness, such as therapies, exercise and even your nutrition - but if youâre struggling with depression or any aspect of your mental wellness, please check in with your doctor or mental health professional to get support. Over the counter herbal stuff is very unlikely to cut it. Also, you should always be aware that even ânaturalâ remedies can have serious side effects (especially if mixed with some types of medication. Iâm looking at you St. Johnâs Wort and SSRIs like ProzacâŠ).
Donât forget to take good care of yourself â take time out for you and rest when you need to.

I'm a newbie and I'm having a good today so I need advise? I feel like I'm in the twilight zone or been abducted and being used a social experiment. I think I'm losing my mind. The irritability, anger, combative, sadness and feeling of loneliness is overwhelming. I need help communicating with husband on explains this in a rational way without turning into a raging lunatic or a babbling balling baby. If I don't get this shit under control he may divorce me (jk) I think. I go on Monday to new Dr. I've experienced some mild symptoms but most recently it's been bad (the feelings). I tell myself that it's just part of the process and it will pass but then my mind says, "Nope, your completely logical and everyone else is crazy", then I got back to, "I'm going crazy", then I cry and get mad for crying. The cycle repeats. It's a roller coaster I can't get off. THIS SUX!!!! Any advise helps?

Firstly, I'd complete a symptom checklist; you can download one here if you haven't already been noting the full range of symptoms:

If you're thinking of treatment, then regulated Bio-identical HRT would be your best option. (AKA Body-identical HRT in some regions).
Our M-brace The Change partners handbook might be useful too, to help you communicate with your husband. You can download that here:

I hope that's helpful for a start đâ€ïž
