I’ve just been to the doctors about my weight. I’ve gained 20kg since having bub in May & now weigh 90kg. I’ve tried everything to lose weight but am having no luck. The number just keeps rising. I was eating about 1300 calories per day. She prescribed me duromine & told me to eat less than 900 calories per day. Does this seem incredibly low to anybody else? She told me to eat a boiled egg for breakfast then have black coffee when I’m hungry to ‘trick myself’. I’ve previously had an eating disorder & feel like she’s basically told me to go back to starving myself & living a very unhealthy lifestyle

This sounds like awful advice! Have you had your hormones checked? Are you still breast feeding? This sounds like a hormonal issue/thyroid issue.

Please look for another GP or healthcare professional for advice.
The one which you are given is HORRIBLE. The cal intake per day is ridiculously low, it will not only affect your hormones but also give rise to many other health issues.
I’m too 7m pp and yes losing that baby weight is challenging but I’m not starving myself for it rather I try to stay more active in the day to burn more than I consumed.

1300 calories is low also, especially if your breastfeeding

I'm not an expert, but 900 calories a day, and surely your body will start eating it's muscle...?

Oh wow geez sounds like a crappy eating plan … btw if you’ve had any anxiety issues I would stay away from duromine & especially if you’re breastfeeding
1300 calories is already quite low… did she suggest any walking or exercise ?
Walking an hour a day pushing the pram would really help with the low calories that you’re already doing!! I put on 20 aswell & I lost it from walking daily probably could’ve lost even more if I stopped eating biscuits & chocolates

You should definitely see a Dietitian / nutritionist. That sounds like terrible advice from the GP.

You need to report her. 1300 is far too low your body is probably panicking and has decided to store fat

Even 1300 calories per day isn't enough

That's not enough fuel for your body! I've heard women should eat less than 1400 calories a day and if you are breastfeeding, your minimum would be 500-1000 calories higher. Would seek the opinion of a second GP to check for any underlying health issues. You could also talk to a nutritionist to change up your diet in a healthy way.

If you are still breastfeeding you have to work harder to lose the weight because you're body doesn't know we're in a stable environment and food will always be available to it, but with telling you to eat so little and prescribing you this medication I would definitely double check if the medication is bf safe

I'm a big fan of intermittent fasting as I know first hand that it works but I wouldn't do it now as I'm breastfeeding. When doing the 5:2 diet I would limit calories intake to 500 and my husband would do so too, but limit to 600. We did it for around 2 months and lost about 5-7kg each. Intermittent fasting is really good for us, it's not about starving but swapping to low calorie meals. You could literally snack all day long on nearly zero calories snacks like carrots. Your body also adjusts to eating less for those 2 days. A colleague of mine has been doing this diet for 40 years and it's just her lifestyle.
I'm now 69kg (3rd bub is 10 weeks old) and I'm trying to drop down to around 55kg (pre-pregnancy weight). I'm going to give myself around a year or so to get to that goal and I'm doing around 20min of high intensity cardio a day (only exercise where the heart rate is elevated will help burn fat), and eating my first meal 3hrs after waking so my body has a chance to burn fat. I'm not counting calories.

Terrible advice. I’ve had an ED and they are all tips I took to starve myself. I’d suggest another GP, good balanced diet and regular exercise. x
I did get my hormones checked a couple of months ago as I was concerned that could be the problem & was told everything was fine with my results (from a different GP) I do have PCOS so I’m not sure if that’s something that is making things difficult but I haven’t had any symptoms since before I was pregnant other than the weight gain & severe acne
I stopped breastfeeding when bub was 4 months. I definitely wouldn’t have dropped my calories that low while nursing. I was consuming far more then & I feel like that’s when the weight started to pile on
that’s what I was thinking while she was talking
there was no discussion of exercise at all. She just told me repeatedly that 1300 was too much & to eat less than 900. I was just sitting there in shock tbh. I’m probably not doing as much exercise as I should be, but I really thought reducing calories alone would prevent anymore weight gain
I was in so much shock that she was telling me 1300 was too much because I do know it’s definitely on the lower end of how much I should be having. I’m scared to increase it in any way now though
what would be a good amount to be consuming daily? I’m feeling so lost now & really have no idea what I should be doing
I have had bloodtests done and they came back all fine. I have PCOS so I’m not sure if that is making things harder for me. I’m definitely thinking about seeing a nutritionist now because I know what she told me isn’t healthy. Do you need a Dr referral to see a nutritionist?

Oh geez what a terrible doctor!!! That’s why I don’t bother seeing GP’s !! Ekkk she could have atleast referred u to a dietician if she thought your eating habits were that bad
Anyways maybe don’t take duromine while breastfeeding not sure if u are but you’ll know what I mean once u try it !
If you’re not breastfeeding look into Slim By Nature to suppress the appetite they also give u a low carb eating plan that’ll help you if u want to get past the plateau
I’m no longer breastfeeding. I wouldn’t even consider eating such a small amount or medication if I still was
that’s all I could think. It felt like very pro ana advice & it made me feel so uncomfortable. I left sooooo upset. I don’t need that to be put back into my head. Especially by a GP who is supposed to be a professional

No, you don't need a referral for a nutritionist.

It might actually be your thyroid if your gaining on only 1300 calories? I know someone that had postpartum thyroiditis and gained quite a bit of weight after birth. I'd trying going to a different GP and getting another opinion. That GP sounds like an absolute quack.
Good luck!!

I’m a PT and have had nutrition training as well happy to help if you want to message me

Just saw that you have PCOS. I have another friend that had an insulin resistant type and weight gain was one of the symptoms. Could also be related. It can be hard to get to the bottom of sometimes, but 900 calories isn't the answer. Hopefully you find the root cause xx

This GP doesn’t know anything.
If trying to lose fat, the best thing you can do is to lose it slowly - eating 10% less than maintenance. Cardio AND resistance training are proven to be best. Resistance training and not eating too much in a deficit will save as much muscle as possible while losing fat, which protects your metabolism.
This GP is a quack.
