My 21 month old has in the last week suddenly started going cross eyed (both inward). It doesn’t happen constantly but if she’s drinking from her water bottle and looking at it close up it does or if I touch her nose it happens so literally when something is on her face.
Her eyesight seems good, we’ve always read books and she points out the smallest things in the books so I know she can see well and don’t underhand why this is happening.
I am worried and got a referral for her to see paediatric ophthalmologist but there are no bookable appointments and the hospital system just says if I’ve not heard back from my request by 1st March to call. I can’t wait 2.5 months, what if it gets worse in meantime?
Does anyone have any advice or experienced similar?

My little one has alternating inward facing eyes, albeit not constant. Actually a good thing that it is alternating apparently. We took him to an optician that was happy to see littles (quite the rarity apparently!) about it and they did an eye test. He's now got a glasses prescription and has been seen at the eye hospital, currently waiting on a referral to see the consultant - possibly requiring surgery. Might be worth finding an optician to have a look and they might put in an urgent referral for you if they're concerned.
Keep an eye (excuse the pun) on your little girl's eye movement to see if it only happens in the situations you described or if it happens at other times too.
Fun fact we learnt at the eye hospital is that apparently all babies are long sighted to begin with and their prescription would be about +3!
thank you for taking the time to write. I’ve been keeping an eye on my little girls eyes since I noticed it and it does look like right eye does it more than the left one but every now and then both eyes go inward usually when looking at something that’s so close it’s practically on her face.
I’m so worried about her possibly needing glasses so young, she hates things on her head or face, so keeping glasses on her would be major challenge. I’m also worried in case it’s a sign of something worse as have been reading all sorts.
How often does your little ones eyes go inward and what did they say about possible surgery? What will the surgery do?

What was the outcome ?
she was seen at the children’s eye hospital yesterday. I’m so relieved that her eyesight was found to be good and her eyes straight and as expected for her age. She apparently has a pseudo-squint which is not a true squint but more to do with the skin at the inner corner of the eyes/bridge of nose and as the face grows it should become less apparent.
They can’t rule out that she won’t develop a squint but for now her eyes are ok and I’m hugely relieved that she doesn’t need glasses or surgery x
