How did you guys introduce foods to your baby? Any recommendations of how I should start purees? I assume it's normal for them to spit it up at first.

Hi, I never tried purées I just offered my baby mash / Yorkshire pudding / broccoli/ carrots.. I’m doing BLW but my LO won’t be 6months until 21st January but has took to the food properly this past week , he used to spit it out n blow raspberries but I kept putting it on his highchair so he could get a feel for the food whether he ate it or not back then didn’t matter to me as such.. x

@Rachel hiya sorry for jumping in but I would be interested to know if you gave it in small pieces as I'm so worried if I introduce solids my LO will choke but she will be 8 months next Monday. I'm so unsure what to do really x

I started at 4 months and he would suck on the mango my partner was eating (he don’t like mango now) so we tried it puréed the next day and he loved it. I then gave him carrots steamed and puréed which he also loved, then bananas mashed with a fork etc. after I gave him food from my plate, bits of grains, meat, potatoes etc. he is 6 months now and hates nearly everything puréed, has a issue with texture so too soft he won’t eat. He will rather eat off my plate than his own puréed things so I decided BLW is best. At this stage everything is about discovery but mine fathers lumps over no texture and likes wafers, melty snacks so kinda going backwards a bit now

@Rachel oh okay I can try that. My baby wont be 6 months till January 29th, but I want to start introducing foods. I've tried feeding it to her, but she just spits it out. I'll try to just leave it on her high chair and see what she does...thanks

@Shay yea mine is very observant in what I'm eating but when I offer it to her she puts it in her mouth then wants nothing to do with it afterwards. Offer her mashed foods and purees but just throws it around and/or spits it out. She wont swallow anything.

You can try the BLW method. Big junks of soft fruits/veggies. With this method they can explore food and learn prior to actually eating it. It takes some time for them to start eating and getting used to the idea. They will spit a lot and throw food on the floor, needs patience. I strongly suggest you look BLW method online and do some research abt it. Xx

We went with baby led weaning and it’s the best thing we ever did! Our girl did occasionally have a few purees but now isn’t interested and just wants finger foods!! It’s completely normal for babies to gag on foods and my girl still spits lots out 🤣
You can start however you want with purées really - we did some veg purées but now just give veg as is. Our girl is formula fed so we made the purées with her formula, you can do the same with breast milk if that’s how you’re feeding 😊

hiya! Larger pieces are recommended rather than small chunks - this is as baby can break down larger appropriate sized pieces with their gums whereas smaller pieces can be a choke risk. If you’re unsure, I’d recommend the Solid Starts app/website - it gives details on how to prepare and serve finger foods to babies based on their age 😊

BLW Solid Starts 🙌 no purées
Stay patient, keep offering foods, and working through allergens. Don’t expect them to eat much first couple months. It’s all trying new textures, learning to relax the tongue thrust, and learning to swallow.

@Bec thanks for the advice. I can try with BM

oh thats a great page. I followed it

Remember that before one is just for fun- most of their nutrition will still come from milk. It’s just for them to explore food, get a taste and learn how to eat.

I cut food to finger length like batons n the Yorkshire pudding I halfed so he had chance to hold it - sorry for late reply x
