I’ve been potty training since June! 🤦🏼‍♀️ and we’ve started nursery in January and being referred for speech therapy!

I didn’t potty train my son till he was just over 3 because he had/has a speech delay. Much to peoples disapproval o didn’t start till I knew he was ready because I did that we was totally potty trained with no accidents within a couple of weeks. Within a couple of days he was running to his potty even if ww were out side playing.

@Aimee Wiseman I feel I really caused myself more stress by starting him too early, although he gets the idea- he isn’t getting it so I hope that is because of his speech!

I havent started yet either for the same reason. Getting stressed at the thought of it cos he doesnt tell us when he needs to go.

@EmmaI definitely felt like I wouldn’t get anywhere if I didn’t wait. I got a lot of comments about being a lazy mum but always go with your gut. No one knows your child more then you The first couple of days I literally got nothing done and all we focused on was the potty. If I was making him sit on the potty I made sure I was literally right next to him the whole time. Sometimes it was close to an hour so not ideal but it’s what worked for us. And I was with him every step of the way. I had the attitude that if I was expecting him to do that then I needed to aswell. I would sit with him while he was on the potty and I would drag his table over and we would draw and play games then when he did is first wee the utter excitement definitely made him realise what I was asking.

@Aimee Wiseman I wasn’t pressured into doing it, I 100% thought he was ready and would take to it! He has been through phases where he’s totally got it (even though he’s never vocalised it) but he’s stood by the potty when he needed it so I never felt like going back into nappies was right either! But now he’ll only go if I prompt him. Nursery seem to be focusing on his speech so hopefully that will help the potty stuff!

I found with my son he didn’t understand how the potty worked so I brought a toilet step and I just kept taking him to the toilet every hour and he learned to use the toilet in a month he started toilet training at nearly 2 he’s now 3 turning 4 soon and can use the toilet so we’ll just at night time he’ll we’re a pull up

Thank you all so much for your comments. It’s nice to know I’m not alone in this! I haven’t really had any pressure on me- I’m just panicking as he’s the only one in his nursery group that is potty trained. I thought we were getting somewhere as he started to tell him when he was going wees and poops in his nappy but now we’re back to asking him if he’s done it and he says no. He’s not severely speech delayed but it’s definitely there compared to his peers and his nursery has picked up on it- currently waiting on our first speech therapy session but not for another 8 or so weeks!

I was so worried when my son was doing that but just kept persevering and all worked out and going to nursery helped him soo much with his speech

My son doesnt have speech delay & he isnt potty trained yet. He gets it, he sometimes uses the toilet and does at nursery on occasion, but he really likes the comfort of a nappy.
