Opinions on Basingstoke maternity ward/midwives

Not long to go now and intrigued on people's opinions on what the Sherborne building maternity ward is like and the midwives?

I had a bad experience with lack of communication with something serious etc so I’m unsure

Genuinly could not praise the staff enough. The most amazing people. I could not of wished for better people to surround me during labour 💕

I gave birth in June 2023 and couldn’t fault it!! The midwife’s were so lovely I had 3 midwives because I laboured for so long 😅the building it’s self and the Labour room was clean! And the postnatal department was lovely and the staff were also lovely also! Good luck mumma! Xx

They’ve been good for me with appointments after baby was born. However I didn’t have a good experience with a suspected ectopic in 22 so ended up transferring care to Winchester to resolve that.. I tried again with Basingstoke for my second pregnancy but had a really poor experience with my first consultant appointment so again switched care to Winchester.. I’m glad I did for my own peace of mind given experience but it has made it a little harder getting other appointments etc now he’s here in terms of who can refer where and funding allocation etc.

We had our little boy in Basingstoke hospital and the midwives we had were great honestly! Only thing we didn’t have a good experience with was the neonatal unit as he was taken straight down there for a few days. The nurses there quite frankly told us we aren’t allowed to touch him (because we’ll wake him up) and that we can only hold him at his feed times, which wasn’t true at all, they just couldn’t be bothered to take him out of the incubator (he only had a feeding tube in at the time so we were more than allowed to hold him whenever) they didn’t encourage us to put him on boob to get him to latch on because once again we weren’t allowed to hold him apparently. But after me breaking down into tears upstairs with the midwives, they got a hold of the paediatric doctor who said we’re more than welcome to hold him and touch him whenever and then I guess they had a word with these specific two nurses who then allowed us to hold him in the end and all!

But then again we may have just had a one off those experiences! Yours may not be the same at all! So don’t stress too much and if you have to go to neonatal by any chance, put your foot down if they ever try to restrict your access to your baby in any way! Xx

i had my son in july ‘23 and everyone throughout my pregnancy were fantastic! luckily my labour was quick and thankfully i wasn’t pushing for long, but the midwife Chiara and student midwife Rihanna were amazing throughout and made sure the both of us were ok. best of luck! xx

I gave birth April 2022 so it’s been a while but the midwives were lovely! Only thing is nobody told me I was only allowed to leave once they’d seen me breastfeed twice so ended up staying in for a while longer than I should have

These are reassuring to read, I'm 38 weeks and haven't lived in the area very long (moved here last April) but every time I've mentioned Basingstoke to staff at work they all kinda go "...oh 😬", so I'm happy to hear a lot of positives! 😂

Honestly the most incredible team of midwives and nurses, we were in awe of them after having our baby in Oct 2023. Good luck, you’re in the best hands! Xx

Incredible, we actually missed it once we were discharged home 😂🥰

I had my son in December 2022 and I was really nervous about going there because I had heard some really bad things about it but I couldn’t fault the midwives at all! They were all so caring and reassuring the whole time we were there which was about 4 days as I had to be induced and was a super busy time! The only negative we had was the post natal care was a bit left to your own devices which as a first time mum was quite scary but they are around and we had a lovely health care assistant who sat down with us and went through what to expect after discharge and follow up appointments. Wishing you all the best x

I just transferred over from Frimley Park, and have to say that I’m really impressed so far with the level of care 🙂

@Ellie I have birth in June 2023 as well 🩵

I had both oh my kids there and I can’t prise them enough! Lovely staff ♥️ My friend had her baby girl in Frimley in May and she had c section and her hubby had to leave at 9pm. Where my hubby could stay.

So I started off my pregnancy journey at RBH. I had previously had really bad experiences within the gyne ward when I was going through my treatments of endometriosis. I was shouted at by doctors and nurseres, told everything was in my head and even left with a speculum in side me for 15 mins. Due to this experience I wanted my baby at RBH. RBH were awful. Could never get hold of my midwife, my parented was told “he needs to get that under control” when we told her that we BOTH have ASD and to top it all off when I started bleeding a few weeks ago (baby and me were fine) The receptionist at RBH left me in a hall way by myself where staff in there lunches. I was not seen for an hour and sobbed the whole time and no one came over. The receptionist came over an hour later and was like “has no one seen you”. She had actually taken me to the wrong place. It was the worst experience of my life.

Since being at Basingstoke it’s been amazing. Someone is always on hand if you need anything and nothing is too much. The girls on the early pregnancy team do an amazing job and so do the midwife’s. I now feel safe and happy to have my baby at Basingstoke and really cannot thank them enough.

I think they’ve made a lot of improvements in the last two years. I had my daughter in summer 2021 and honestly I didn’t she. A good experience. I was very high risk and they didn’t seem to understand my case. Everyone at the time agreed their experience wasn’t very good but from 2022 onward people seem to sing their praises so perhaps it’s better!🫶🏼
