Introducing formula to EBF baby

I’ve been EBF for nearly 6 months, however recently I’ve noticed that my milk supply has dropped. I want to introduce one bottle of formula at night just to take the pressure off slightly. Has anyone done this before? And if so what would you say the best formula is for a baby who has only been breast fed?

My baby has quite bad reflux and has always struggled with his wind and gets it very painful during the night so I think we’d want to introduce something more sensitive for him.

Thank you so much!

We tried this and haven't had much luck (also EBF for 6 months).

We first tried an anti-reflux formula. He took it fine in terms of taste, it was very thick and creamy, but it constipated him and it turned out he was allergic to cow's milk protein, so he reacted to that.

We then tried him on a prescription formula for the CMPA which he completely rejected. It supposedly tastes rank.

If you're looking at an anti reflux one the main issue would be potentially constipating him as they are so thick (that's why they help the reflux though as it thickens the stomach contents).

If he struggles with wind you might want to try a Comfort formula. We looked at this too but our HV advised us against that as it can make poos more explosive and his were already explosive but if that's not an issue for you that might be a good choice for you. They're partially hydrolysed meaning the milk proteins are already partially broken down so there's less digestive work for baby's tummy to do...

... Comfort might not help with reflux though.

It is frustratingly really just trial and error until you find one that works for your baby. Kendamil is supposedly the most similar to breastmilk so that might be a good place to start?

PS have you started solids yet as that should help the reflux and then you might not have to think about an anti reflux formula?

Thank you so much.

His poos are already quite explosive at the moment as he’s started to miss a day and then it all comes out at once 🤦🏻‍♀️ We’ve not started introducing solids yet but we do want to and I can tell he’s definitely interested.

I’m just worried as he can’t properly sit and hold himself up yet and is still quite wobbly!

I’ve read that Kendamil seems to be the closest to breast milk!

We did the same and my LG has kendamil at night. She hasn’t got reflux so not sure about that aspect but her stools havent changed. Its not very thick either - very similar to breastmilk

We tried the ready to feed bottles first before buying the tub 😊

You probably want to avoid a Comfort one then.

No rush to start solids! You absolutely want to wait until the head control/sitting is stable.

It sounds like Kendamil would be a good starting point for you. As Alisha has suggested you can get little ready to feed bottles which would be a good way of trying it!

Not formula related but my boy has reflux and is windy at night and it wakes him up. He would always poo at 3am and it was sore for him. I started massaging his belly every night before his bath as bedtime routine. He now doesn’t wake up with a sore tummy in the night and he waits until morning to poop. I also wear him in the sling for one of his naps as the contact against me helps the gas by having tummy pressure (or just do more tummy time). Type in colic belly massage on google:)

Yes my little boy is awake every hour at night with really painful wind and it’s like it hurts him to get it out!! After 2 months of it getting progressively worse and me living off an hours sleep a night 🫠 We went to the doctors and she has prescribed Omeprezole, we’re on night 5 of given him it and to be honest there isn’t any improvement as far as I can tell 😔 it makes nighttime’s so difficult and I’m always a bag of anxiety before bed as I know I won’t be getting any sleep!!

Sounds so hard and like you’ve been through the wringer! Tbh the only way my boy would settled (at least a little easier) was c-curling him. It’s much easier to keep him asleep and settled. But belly massages at night and nappy times helped a lot, give it a go :)

Have you tried camomile tea for the digestive issues? Really helped my LO, I’d recommend the HiPP one x

Baby clothes

Just out of curiosity, why do parents love zipper onesies?

Don’t get me wrong, I tried zipper ones it’s easy to zip in and out when putting it on the first time and taking it out, but I find it difficult when changing diapers especially when baby is asleep.

I prefer those kimono style buttons where it’s easy to button or too down button with crotch snaps.

Is everyone thinking the same or different? Lol

AITA

In the uk there is an outbreak of meningitis, in a specific area mainly. My BD has family from that area and decided to go and meet up with them, I said if he does then he cannot have contact with the kids for 7-10 days after incase he picks anything up. Am I being over dramatic? I reallyyy don’t want my young kids getting anything serious

This might rattle some people

Ok, this might get a bit long, and a bit bumpy, so get comfy and buckle up.

So about a week or 2 ago, there was a post on here regarding sleepovers. Not letting their child go to them as you can't trust who'll be at the house etc.

Now, given recent incidents in nurseries and schools, plus my own experience back in the 90s, I am more concerned about sending my child to nursery and later school than I am to a friend's house for a sleep over.

The other day a man was jailed for abusing children at the nursery he worked at. A woman has been arrested for sleeping with an underage boy and then getting pregnant by a different underage boy while on bail for the first offence.

Young girls and boys get sexually harassed and bullied when at school, not all of them. But more than you think. And not just by other kids, but by adults who we as parents are trusting to look after our kids.

A sleepover, is a more controlled environment, with only a handful of people coming into contact with your child. A school, a club etc there can be 100s of people coming into contact with your child.

I was targeted at 7 years old by the owner of a prominent private school. Thankfully, I wasn't SA'd. In year 5 of primary school, I started to develop early, I was harassed by the boys and teachers made remarks about how my uniform didn't fit right, always "adjusting it" around my chest and legs.

Years 7-9 of secondary school were hell. But it was all under the guise of "we're just messing around". A teacher twanging my exposed bra strap (none uniform day) is not "messing around".

Boys pinning me down trying to rip open my shirt to see my breasts.

I fear for my daughter. I hope she takes after my father's family, flat chested.

We need to educate all our children, what is acceptable behaviour. And to come to us, as their parents should ANYTHING happen.

At this point I’m not enjoying motherhood

My 22 month old is horrendous at the moment🫣 biting, hitting, pushing, pulling and shoving not only adults but children he also wants what other children have and will just snatch it away from them.

We repeat ‘nice hands’ ‘be gentle’ ‘let’s share’ etc

But how do I make him understand what he’s doing isn’t very nice? At the end of the day I feel like I’ve just been saying his name all day and nothing else.

What can I do?

Dummy

My baby has had a dummy since about 2 weeks old (now 5 months) and over the course of the last month we weaned her off it during the day only for naps and night (which was fine) and then 5 days took it completely away during the day.

The first day no dummy was fine, the second bit rougher. But now it feels impossible she just moans and cries all the time it takes ages for her to go down to sleep (she’s always been an amazing sleeper)

I thought it was meant to get better as time went on not worse. I’m at my wits end I dunno what to do.

Currently typing this as she screams uncontrollably in the car and I cry with her cos I can’t do anything.
