Teacher questions

Hi there,
I’m a primary teacher who is due at the end of July.
I work for a private school and my contract explicitly states I’m paid on the basis of a day rate of 201 working days shared over 12 months. Can I find a way to get my summer 2024 pay at the end of my maternity?
My second issue is that normally I would qualify for shared parental leave except my partner won’t have worked long enough by due date (he is French, thank you brexit) - is there any way around this and does anyone know of a company or individual that could give me some specific advice about any entitlements I could claim ?
feeling worried about no pay after week 39 and returning to a full on job with an 8 month old in 10-12 hours of child care 5 days a week just won’t work ..

Thanks in advance 🙏

Google the charity "Pregnant then screwed" they provide advice on this matters.

I work for a private school too. You will still get maternity pay during the summer as far as I am aware.

There will be better childcare assistance once you return. You will be able to claim at least 15 hours free from September 2024 and 30 hours from September 2025

Feel free to message me if you want more info on how my maternity pay worked x

Hey, I’m a teacher and my daughter was born 28th July. I asked them to add the 5 weeks annual leave, owed as I worked the full academic year at the end of my SMP and they agreed. I think it is up to the heads discretion.

So I went off maternity last year at the beginning of July, so I need to come back this year July for a week and then they are paying me for this summer

I know you said you can't get SPL. But I'd perhaps email Teacher's SPL for advice? Lovely people. Also for additional advice- you can always contact ACAS 30mins free advice xx

I gave birth before the summer holidays last year - the NEU told me that there was no way i was getting the summer pay even though our contracts say its spread over 12 months. It still doesn’t make sense to me and i felt robbed 😂 especially as i had worked the entire academic year and my colleagues were all getting their pay and i wasn’t because i had birthed a baby! My other colleague gave birth at the end of the summer holiday and she got summer holiday pay and then went onto maternity. There is a website worth looking into though google ‘teacher shared parental leave’ i think it is a pink website but it is designed to get you the best deal in terms of pay …

Thanks everyone. I asked teachers spl a while back and they said I wouldn’t qualify. Have also tried looking through the school’s policy about summer pay but seems they have us in a chokehold. What a shame an industry where we care for children doesn’t support us better!

I’m so sorry. I would say that is absolutely shocking to want to do that to staff.
Have you considered writing to governors about the unfairness of this.

Going back to work!

Already thinking about this! Told my boss I was pregnant this week at 10 weeks, he was so happy for me. He’s recently became a first time Dad and was showing me pictures of his baby. I told him my plans about going back after 6 months and he looked at me like I was mad, am I!? I absolutely love my job and cannot imagine giving it up, I manage a team and am petrified my position won’t be there if I had a year off. My husband gets 6 months full pay so the plan would be for him to have the last 6 months off and I also made it clear to my boss that I would like to go part time. That way we can hopefully parent together 4/7 days rather than just the weekend! I am such an overthinking! 🤣 but this is what I’m struggling with the most, I’ve worked full time since I was 17 (12 years ago) and the max time I’ve had off in one go is 2 weeks when I got married. I’m sooo excited to be a Mum and we decided now was the right time, which it 100% is! But I feel so on edge about not working! I’m sure once I’m on maternity leave I won’t even think about work! Has anyone else felt the same?

What are we giving our soon-to-be 3yo for their birthdays?

We have the magnetiles, we have the kinetic sand and play doh, we have the play kitchen…

Literally, is there anything left in the world to buy this spoilt kid? 😅

Baby groups?

Hello there!!
I hope you enjoying the 5month babies 🫠 the cuteness outweighs everything over here.
We live in the area of Croydon & need to start going to baby groups ( I NEED it more than him though) but I am a little bit clueless. Any recommendations?
We are happy to travel a bit too.
Thanks ☺️
